Well I have a security six 101mm barrel. I have checked into having it re barrelled, $345. Here is the question, would it be better to sell it and buy a new 357. Or have this one re barrelled? Anyone have an idea of what a prohibited security six would be worth or what kind of demand there would be for one.

Thanks Steve

I'd search the EE for prohibited guns and extrapolate a price from there. Most seem to be priced between $250 and $400. You'd probably be lucky to get the $375 it would cost to rebarrel. You are at the whim of a dwindling demand, so I would say rebarrel and keep it.

$375 seems pretty reasonable and if it's a nice job, works well and 4.25"-5" it would be unique and worth $500 easy, so the money spent will bring value to the gun, and you will be saving it from eventual destruction.

Rebarrel it to a restricted, and you could sell it for $450-$500.

I really think that is overly optimistic - the difficulty with rebarrelling the Security Six is that the front sight is integral to the barrel and shortening it will requite a re-fabrication of the entire front site base and whatnot. I guess this might be where the cost comes from but I could be wrong. I'd say you might be better off to find someone willing to take it in partial trade for a restricted wheelgun, probably further ahead than creating a NP barrel length. I have found that one-offs, unless from a big name smith generally have a lower ROI than an unmodified piece...

You know what they say about free advice - it's worth what you paid for it...

blake

ROI for a GTG ,well executed re barrel should be GITPR. :)

Rate of interest (I think)
Good to go
Good in that price range

Op are you looking to sell either way or would you be keeping the re barrel?

I have a Security Six, very nice wheel gun! It has a nice trigger, it's well made, strong for those stupid handloads, what's not to like?

As for the rebarrel, I'd say it's worth it if the guy does good work. Where can you get an excellent .357 for the price you quoted?

As someone else said if it's your only 12(6) you'll have to pick up a "place holder" or another decent prohib before you have it reclassified.

I just happen to have a few...

I would be keeping it once it was re barrelled and reclassified

Is it registered to you now?
Is it stainless?
What does your gunsmith quote include? $345 seems like a great deal.....
What kind of front sight is being installed?
When you think of the cost of the barrel, the front sight and the work to fit and install..... that's a sweet deal.....if it's done well.
