Are Sellier & Bellot primers considered a 'hard shell' or 'soft shell' primer?

Will a tuned S&W with a lightened hammer fall ignite them?

I think they fall somewhere in the middle between CCI (hard) and Federal (soft). I tried them in my S&W Model 10 PPC gun which has a very light action and got misfires, especially in DA. In fairness I also tried Winchester, Fiocchi, Dominion and Federals and the only ones that ignited reliably were Federals.

A friend of mine (and co-competitor in F Class Sask.) uses them for his 308 loads in Kelby (Panda) Action.
I don't know how hard a Kelby firing pin hits on average... but my friend swears that he get more consistency from S&B primers than he does with anything else.

Tagged for Interest as I might experiment with S&B primers someday down the road.

I have used literally thousands of S&B primers. Without issue. Until recently. I installed a Zev trigger kit in my Glock 21. I started getting FTF's with the S&G LP primers. A lot of them. I realize that it is a lighter trigger so taking that into account I started using CCI LP primers. They ignite without issue, zero FTF's with them. I also started having issues in my STI 45 with the S&B primers. Using the CCI LP primers dealt with that issue as well. I hadn't used the S&B primers in that pistol until recently. However, i use the S&B LP primers in my JR carbine and my son's without issues.
I also use the S&B small pistol primers in a number of 9mm's and have never had an issue with them.
So I have come to the conclusion that some pistols with a lighter trigger may not ignite consistently with the S&B primers, specifically LP primers for me anyway.

I think they are definitely softer than CCI. I quite like them. Shot 5000+ or the small pistol and 1000 so far of the large pistol. No issues. Both striker and hammer. I have some of their small rifle primers to try. Just not going through them as fast as I was a year ago...

I use a boat load of S&B primers. With my tuned 66 I only get about 33% reliability. Federal only.

I have a nice stash of 4000 S&B large rifle. I am using primers marked in the 90's, so they will sit nice on the shelf for now.

I wish now I would have bought more. Tends was selling them but are out now.
