Selling off collection

The .270 bashing is a meme from 24hourcampfire. You can ignore it quite safely.

A mild-kicking cartridge with .300 Win Mag ballistics, bullet weights between 6.5x55 and .30-06 and decent barrel life is probably one of the most perfectly balanced options for hunting North American ungulates from pronghorn to moose and elk. IMO with today's mono-metal and bonded bullets, the .270 130 grain is a no-brainer.

Accept the rifle with thanks. The 6.8x63mm is a very good cartridge.

X2! ......... I once read a commentary stating that aside from the 222/223 type cased cartridges there really hasn't been very much cartridge advancement since the 270Win.

I would tend to agree with this.

First ask him if he's sure he wants to liquidate the collection. Then accept the rifle and shake your buddy's hand and find a bottle of scotch or something like that for him. Sounds like he wants to make a nice gesture and returning it would be a nice touch... Even though it's a .270 :p

Seriously? Your friend wants to give you a rifle and you don't know if you should take it? Jack O-Conner was a serious .270 fan, and a lot of other guys too. It will get the job done and not knock you on your ass. Now if you are going after Kodiak bears, maybe take a different rifle. I don't even own a .270 but I have its parent 30-06 and a .35 Whelan. If you lived in SON, you definitely need a .270.
