Selling Pelts in Ontario?

I shoot a lot of small game such as rabbits and squirrel and either I consume it or it's given away to people that will. I always have a bunch of hides that end up getting tossed with the de-boned carcass.

Is there a place that I can take rabbit, deer, fox, coyote ect. pelts to sell around SW Ontario or that I can ship somewhere?

I'm not sure where to start looking for this type of stuff.

Also do they need to be tanned or do they usually buy them salted with the flesh removed?

"It is illegal to buy, sell or barter any game wildlife or specially protected wildlife or their parts, except under the authority of a licence and as permitted by the regulations. The holder of a small game licence may sell the pelts of furbearing mammals lawfully harvested under that licence to a person who may lawfully buy these pelts. Contact a ministry office for more information."

looks like you can, to a party that can lawfull buy these pelts


though checking with MNR sounds like a good idea too
 
The fur industry isnt all that great these days so I doubt you'd get much for pelts with bullet holes in them (if they even sell)). You're lucky to get a good buck these days for a well handled, PERFECT fur. Their is proper method to preparing furs. It must be skinned properly (case skinned for most things) then fleshed, stretched and dried. Its a lot of work. Send in a bunch of furs with meat scraps hanging off them shoved in bag and you wont get any response. I'd imagine the fur house would throw right in the garbage.

Heres a good place to start for some info. You also have to keep in mind its an auction. They dont just buy furs from you. They actually have to sell to clothing manufacturers.

I used to send my pelts to an Auction in North Bay Depending on what kind of fur you may need a trappers license as well. A friend of mine topped the coyote sale last year with $30 pelt not exactly a goldmine if you 've ever skinned fleshed and stretched one.
 
I work in the fur business, and there is a massive international auction house in Toronto run by NAPA. You're going to want to skin it in case form and if you can prepare a steady flow of pelts you can usually hire a company through NAPA to flesh, pin, tan, etc.

I just sent a beauty Yote to the AH and my boss figures it'll sell for around $100 or so!
 
Let us know if you get the 100.00 I know #### about fur,but I find 100.00 to be pie in the sky.
 
Well considering mink goes anywhere from $70-80 per pelt, it wouldn't be a far stretch to see a quality coyote go for 100. The sales in february, so we'll see.
 
Those prices seem interesting, I'm not too familiar with wild furs. There are alot of aspects to a pelt that determine a price, this I do know as I help grade our farmed mink. We usually end up with 30-40 lots based on colour, nap and of course damaged. I think our top lot of black males went for around $85/pelt, but the market does fluctuate quite radically.

I think you mean NAFA (North American Fur Auctions) ;)
NAPA sells auto parts.

Good luck getting $100.....most go for less than $50.
 
Last time I took the time to skin a coyote, I got about $20 for it. Given the hassle (and the fleas) I find it a better use of my time to give them to any sort of local who wants to go through it for themselves. But $100 for a yote? That seems a bit high in my opinion... last I heard they were in the $40 range this year... but don't quote me on that. I haven't sold any furs for about 10 years.
