What are my options?

My dad wants a semi for coyote hunting. He had two running across a field in front of him last winter and he had my bolt gun and said he couldn't get on them fast enough. (he's used to a 742 woodsmaster .308 for deer hunting)

I know of the ruger mini-14 .223 but what else?

Don't think any of those are in the calibers you're after though. Maybe a Browning BARF?

Little confused as to why he couldn't get on them. First shot speed is the same with any action, do you mean he couldn't get the second dog? Or he lacked the volume of fire needed to ensure a hit on running game?

Consider the Remington 7615 pump. Good accuracy and the availability of 10 round LAR mags. Any semi auto centerfire puts you at 5 round max. They're not good for bench/bipod shooting, but great for everything else where a bolt gun isn't in the equation. Something to consider anyhow.

Sorry, I meant when he would have to rack the bolt after each shot he would loose sight of the coyotes and it would take him too long to get back on them. (I know, I told him to just shoot better the first time)

He's used a semi all his life deer hunting ,wants to get into coyote hunting a bit with me and the hounds, so he wants his own gun, and wants a semi.

I didn't know of many semiautomatic options in varmit calibers, thought I would ask.

.270 is max here, and he doesn't really want another big gun, he liked shooting my .22-250 and .223, but doesnt like the action.

- Browning BAR Light Weight Stalker, BAR Light Weight Mossy Oak Camo, BAR Short Trac Walnut Oil Finish, BAR Safari...all come in .243 caliber.

- Remington 7600 (pump) or any of the older semi iterations, or the newest 750 semi...all come in .243.

Have fun.

he'd feel right at home, with what I use, a 742 Woodsmaster in 6mm.
he may want a quality s/a, look at a BAR in 243, knock 'em dead for sure!

Kel-Tec SU 16, bought one for this winters coyote hunt. You may not like the mini 14 but I hunted with one last winter and it was fun. The open sights on the newer 580 series are very good.

Umm.. I know of 2 mags that up your limit to 10 rounds. LAR 15 mags and XCR pistol mags both feed .223 centerfire cartridges.

SSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your not suppose to talk about things like that! I also know of a certain mag that will send 10 out of a 742 in a hurry, but I would't do it, honestly! ;)

A BARF?!?....Hee hee, :D , I did not think they were THAT bad!

They are great rifles.... I prefer bolts... your dad should be prepared o get a better second shot... if his ability to take a secodn shot is less than adequate then perhaps he should reconsider doing so..... as hunters we have a responsibility to put our quarry down clean whether trophy deer or varmints

If he likes the Remington already, pick him up a used 7400 on EE in .243Win.
I owned one many years ago and it was accurate with factory and very nice shooting with handloads.

Why not stick to the .308 if pest control is the reason? Are you limited to caliber in your area?

I think your Father knows and explained it perfectly. He is really used to his Rem Semi with the cross bolt safety on the rear of the trigger guard.

Your gun will have a different safety so he would have struggled with it in the heat of the moment and rushed his first shot, and then with a bolt action of similar caliber there would have been substantially more recoil and muzzle jump to recover from and then add in the unfamilar action to cycle he would defiantely have had trouble getting on them fast enough for the following shots.

The mini-14 would be nice but again he will struggle with an unfamilar safety. I would say he would be most comfortable with a Browning BAR in a 243win, either a BAR Lightweight Stalker 20" barrel or a ShortTrac Stalker. They are both lighter, faster handling firearms than his 742 and the safety is identical. The Brownings are generally more accurate as well, the only drawback is the half assed detachable mag.

It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks and there is no need to here, just get him what he is comfortable with
