I just brought home a used winchester model 490 semi auto .22. I loaded up a couple of the clips and tried loading a shell, but they wont feed into the chamber properly, they kick to the right, and wont chamber. This was with some cheap federal hollow point ammo.

I thought maybe the hollow end was causing it to not feed properly, so I tried some old, shorter, roundhead ammo, and it seemed to feed into the chamber fine.

I'm just wondering if this is normal for these guns, or if mine should work with both and there is just something wrong with it? It will not feed any of the hollow points, nomatter how slow or fast you work the action. It may also have something to do with the length of the bullet, as the older ones are shorter?

I was also wondering when the model 490 was discontinued, and if anyone knows wether you can get a clip which holds more than 10 shells?

Here is a photo of the two types of shells, one on the left feeds fine, the right one wont feed at all.

VI Hunter that is a very strange problem, i have owned a 490 since i was 15, and that is a long time.........No one makes a clip bigger than 10 rounds as far as I know. just the 5 and 10 shot clips. An old old advertisment from the early 70s stated that 15 shot mags were to be available but personally I have never seen them myself. Did you try other ammo? My 490 feeds stingers, CCI minimags, velocitors, yellow jackets, dynapoints,quik-shok,etc, etc....no problem???PS are your mags new or used? damaged at all? nearest the feed lips???
Old abused mags will burst apart at the weld after YEARS of use....but the first sign, is it will only feed right with less than 10 rounds in the mag....then it will push all rounds out through the worn lips....before you can get the full mag makes it into the rifle.

New In Box, in other words the mags are not new, but never used before.....
Bye the way is this rifle clean? Especially the chamber area.
You may want to ensure the firing pin is not seized in the forward position with old carbon as well, I would strongly suggest a complete teardown and clean /inspect before firing this rifle, an often neglected procedure with 22 semi auto rifles.

Search for 490 on RimfireCentral.
Lots of info. One post says that you need to load the ammo with the rims staggered. Lots of posts say it doesn't feed well no matter what.
