Semi Auto, .22 or .17 for gopher hunting

17HMR is the way to go. Gophers are dead with one shot out to about 150yd. Sure the ammo is pricey but I only go on a couple big hunts a year and shoot about 500-1000rds each time. I also shoot at least 200rds of .223 when I'm out as well.

The price of ammo (.223) at walmart is retarded. Not to mention most their ammo is JHP or soft point. Not an issue for the bolt guns. It is an issue for my AR. Centre fire is not a cheap way to go regardless of what calibre you run. When you shoot large quantities at a time price plays a big part in how much and how often one shoots. I find it sad for Wholesale sports here in Calgary who is the HQ for all WHS stores carries such a pathetic quantity of ammo. It is not uncommon to clean them out of FMJ in a single visit. They service over a million people in the immediate area. Not to mention the surrounding communities.

Not like you could use the AR for gophers anyway.

You need to reload. I shoot the 22 Hornet for less than the price of HMR. I went through almost 2,000 rounds last year, and 1500 or so 22lr (from my bolt gun). So far this year with the 10/22 I've gone through almost 2000 aimed in the general direction of a gopher (though the shots/hits ratio isn't as good as the bolt gun, and nowhere near as good as with the Hornet)

Prosper,
I don't have the time or patience to reload. I prefer to keep my firearms intact and under warranty. Mostly its because I'm lazy and don't wanna put out the time or money to reload. Reloads for .223 don't save you a whole lot anyway. That could be about to change if these prices keep climbing.

As for .22, how do you restrain yourself? 2000 rounds a YEAR! Even 2000 a season on gophers? I don't spray and pray when I shoot but I get right cranky if I can't burn atleast a bulk pak a day on the fur balls. I mentioned before that my rifle to date has seen 35,569 rounds. That's not an estimate, that's recorded and logged rounds fired. I use to shoot a 525 bulk pak a day when I used my Anschutz single shot.

Does anyone here reload the .22 WMR? I know it's possible, but I have yet to hear from someone who actually does.

As the hush-hush government documents say..."survivors reports will be most valuable".

JK - there is a way to do it safely, after all (disclaimer if you don't know the way, don't attempt it!).

2,000 HORNETs.
Plus 22-250, 222, 204's and a pile of others. The kill ratio is much higher with the CF's
