Semi-auto 28 gauge??????????????

Just picked up this Franchi AL48 in 28ga ... I can't wait to get out into the field and try her out! I was looking for a CZ sxs in 28ga, but they seem pretty hard to find.

Looks like a fairly long barrel? I'd like something about four to six inches shorter if I could find it! I might have to break down and go with an O/U. :(

Hello ryanloco. The 28 gauge Franchi 48AL are great shotguns.Just be sure to keep a little light oil on the magazine spring and it will work great.Mine will shoot all 28 gauge 2 3/4 inch (70 mm)shells with no problemThe only time I have to change the rings is if I happen to shoot the shorter 28 gauge 2 1/2 inch (65 mm) shells.

Be sure to give us a full report of your hunting and shooting with the shotgun.

What do you plan on hunting and what shell and shot size do you plan on using?

If it is a 28ga wingmaster it will be 25" same as the vintage 1100's. If you are interested in one of those old 1100's there was a member here that may still have one for sale and it did have choke tubes installed. Drop me a Pm

Yes I took and measured my barrel and it is 25".................I am guessing I will be forced to go to an O/U to get a much shorter shotgun...............

Who makes a 28ga O/U shorter than 26"". All the O/U B guns I have looked at are 28 and 26".
25 is plenty short for upland??

Unless my math fails me, an over/under is shorter over-all because there is no receiver. It is the overall length of the shotgun that is the issue for me, because I tend to hunt grouse and rabbits in pretty tight country, lots of vines and canes, etc. In fact lately it has been bad enough that I am considering shaving my beard - which keeps getting caught by thorn bushes. :(

I'm with you now I was focused on just the barrel . I'm not that sharp any more. Makes sense what you are saying

For me, this is just theory. I have not actually HELD an over/under for maybe ten or fifteen years, and NEVER held anything other than a 12, which I thought felt like a club. (With sincere apologies to the double-gun enthusiasts!)

With the exception of perhaps a custom order - there is good reason why a 28ga, particularly one built on an appropriately scaled frame, won't be available with a shorter bbl (read under 26in) - because such configuration (specially in a double gun) would spoil the true handling dynamics of the shotgun. In fact, folks who use 28ga guns on true frames have a preference for longer bbls (read 30in) for both hunting and clay.

I would strongly support your decision to go with an O/U - those could be had with 26in bbls and will be a great compromise for hunting the ON bush due to the short receiver and OAL. It is quite likely that once you migrate to a sub gauge double gun that fits you well then you probably won't consider using anything else for Upland ever again. :)

Look for a Savage Milano (presently discontinued) if you are able to find one. The next step would be a Citori, however, those will be on 20ga frames and a little heavier (not a bad thing though). The exception will be the Citori Superlight Feather. Needless to say, the gun, regardless of brand would've to fit.

Alternately, a 20ga (if you are able to sum up enough liking for one :)) used Browning Upland Special may be searched for and that would come with screw-in chokes and 24in bbls. This one is another great shotgun and very compatible with the "point and shoot" scenarios that we usually encounter during Grouse hunting here in ON.

P.S.. Unable to comment on the proper length for that beard cuz we are not sure how appropriately that is presently scaled to "frame" :D

What about an Akkar 600CY

Very interesting 28 gauge auto loader.I see it is listed with a 22 inch barrel. This is the shortest barrel I have ever seen listed for a pump or auto loading 28 gauge shotgun.

I was not aware of these 28 gauge auto loading Akkar shotguns. Thanks for posting about them.Akkar makes a 28 gauge pump shotgun as well.

No mention of the Mossberg O/U in 28 gauge?
Not worthy of ownership?

O/U guns such as Mossberg, Stevens etc - I would prefer not to touch with a 10ft pole.......double guns built at a low price point are exactly what those are in terms of quality. Having said that, a CZ as a low budget gun would be nice provided one could easily be obtained. The other one that I really like is the Baikal 28ga SxS despite the 7lb weight....I had picked up a used one in really good shape and had Nick Mackinson reshape the hugely out of proportion fore end (typical of Baikal sxs) into a nice splinter. I carry this shotgun more than my other 28s.

This appears to be very good advice, and based on actual personal experience: THANKS!

As for beard length, well let's say it has not quite hit my belly button yet (as it did last year by Christmas), but it is getting there.;)

For me they never made a 28ga that was not worthy of ownership.LOL
The silver doesn't fit me like a browning or some other higher end guns but so far it goes bang every time I have fired it at 25% of the cost of my browning.
For a guy that wants a O/U with tubes and only shoots a few boxes a year I think they will be fine. Have about 300 rounds through mine so far. The initial ones were breaking firing pins so you have to make sure you get one after a certian serial number which mine is. For the money it works.
