Anybody have any experience with the Remington Semi-auto in 35 Whelan. The new Model 750 Woodmaster is advertised as having an improved gas operating system...A buddy is looking for a short range elk killer with quick follow-up capability...

JEC, I have a Rem 750 35 Whelen Carbine. I have to say that it is a great brush buster. I have owned it since new and haven't had any jamming issues. The biggest part of not having it malfunction is keeping it clean. I have put over 200 factory 200-250gr rounds through this gun without any problems. It shoots accurate as well, despite the shotgun style trigger. I do alot of close quarter hunting in heavy cover and it seems to work very well. This gun replaced my Marlin 444 for my brush gun. Overall I would recommend this gun to anyone looking for a brush rifle. It shoots well, short and quick, and has softer recoil do to the gas system. Just my thoughts on the 750. Good Luck

I couldn't shoot mine with the iron sights without it hurting my cheek bone. The comb is very high (much higher than my 7600 pump) and I found I simply HAD to scope it. It was a flinch maker otherwise.

Mine has been fun and reliable feeding too. Make sure all rounds are full length sized too. Should be a good elk gun but make a better brush buster I think. Thge trigger sucks for precision work. You say "short range" and so this gun should be fine. Use 250grain loads. But if longer shots at elk are possible in open country I think I would opt for a bolt gun with a crisp trigger for the task - my 2cents.

Here's my 750 in the carbine flavour -
