Semi auto hunter

Her eis what I woudl do-

Get him an SKS and a case of ammo for him to blast off at the range, and get the BAMBAMBAMABAMBAMABAM sydrome over with.

At the same time, get him a Stevens 200 with some Weaver rings and an inexpensive scope, so he can learn to actually shoot, and take that hunting.

I think the norc m14 is the way to go.

that way, he can feel cool because its a freakin' m14.. shoots 308, accurate buggers. Safety issues wit hit are good. Easy to use/recognize safety, action is simple..

only downside is its heavy.

Semi-Auto

How about a Mini 14 to plink with and buy a cheap bolt gun to hunt with. Or buy him an SKS or M305 or a Mini 14.
I don't really like beginners to start with a semi, I would start them with a single shot or bolt.
Some of the young guys get the second shot frame of mind, and don't think one shot one kill. It all depends upon how this person reacts to having a gun. If they are the type that likes to blast off tons of ammo, get him a 10/22 until he gets over it. Buy an SKS next so he has put a few thousand rounds down range. When he gets tired of that them he might start to think accuracy, then he will be a good candidate for a semiautomatic hunting rifle. If you feel you would be safe hunting with your brother behind you carrying a semiautomatic rifle then you decide.
If you hunt with your brother and feel it would be safer to put him out front because you aren’t comfortable, would you really want him carrying a semi?

He’s your brother you decide.
For serious semi hunting I would buy a Browning first, and a Remington semi second.

Spend $2-$400 and get him a used bolt gun. An autoloader is not a good idea for a new hunter. Or for that matter an old hunter

Everyone is capable of bad advise...

A good sign of it is when there are no reasons given, but the advice giver allways has a strong opinion on the subject.

Why is a semi a bad choice for a new hunter? Why is it any worse than any other action...

This should be interesting...

I used/ hunted with all kinds... semi, bolt.... I wouldn't like to have the use of my semis limited as much as I wouldn't like it for the bolt rifles.

Bad shooters are just that with bolt of semi. Good shooters can shoot both good.
There is no pattern to be observed here. If we are to observe such patterns, then look at what all terorists are using... and ban those AKs. Ooops wait a second.... we already have a ban on rifles based on their looks.... are we going in the same direction?
