semi auto hunting rifle

ok, thanks , was just curious , makes perfect sense. i've always loaded according to my calibers and the individual rifle , didn't think that certain calibers of mine are semi auto etc..... so i've been doing exactly this from the beginning .:D Thanks for the clarification

My choices would be:

Candidates for dress-up:

1. Ruger Mini-30 (Target model - 7.62X39mm)
2. CZ 858 Tactical (7.62X39mm)
3. Russian SKS (very easy to find these days)

Candidates with few dress-up possibilities:

1. Browning BAR (very easy to find one - 308 on EE forum for $550)
2. Benelli R1 (expensive)
3. H&K 770 (hard to find - bought one for $695 in 2006 (considerably more expensive today))

There are other possibilities but I'm not familiar with them.

If you intend to be a serious hunter and want decent quality and reliability, my no 1 choice would be a second hand BAR in either 308 or 30-06. If dress up is important, buy a Russian SKS for just over $200 as a backup and dress it up as you go along.

This way you will cover all bases and still have money to buy ammo. This is why a lot of us on this site including me have more guns than they can count.

Good luck and happy hunting,

Duke1

The Ben R1 gas system is a short action right close to the chamber so it doesn't take much gas to work it.
Not to mention it is pretty much self cleaning.

I haven't bought 300 win mag dies yet, but I know of folks that reload for theirs from one end of the 30 cal spectrum to another without problems.

Think the 6.8 mini would be ok on black bear?
Torn about accuracy, like was posted earlier ,can't believe everything on the net. right?

I don't see why not when loaded with a good bullet-accubond,prohunter,xbullet.Hunting bear over bait ,shots are close ,easily under a hundred yards.Should be no problem

+1 on the Cz-858 i got a deer with mine this year got some itneresting looks from the other hunters as well;)....

Benelli R1 or Browning Bar Safari. .270, .308, .30-06, 300WM...

:agree: benelli, simple enough, cheek piece is interchangeable, same with the butplate, looks cool, probably shoots good (its a benelli) you can change out the barrels, AND reduced recoil.

IIRC a little while back someone on this board got a black bear with their Cz-858...had the pics up as well.

Methinks within 200 meters the 7.62x39 is a good deer cartridge. :)

In the sticky on the CZ 858 theres some pics of a deer taken with a cz858. Ive had mine almost a year now, and used it as my go to rifle for hunting last fall also, sadly I didnt get anything.. Hopfully this year :D

Been there with the Mini 14. Too small and erratic for hunting deer and bears. Tried remington semi`s but found the clips difficult to use in cold weather. Upgraded to a browning 7mm but got tired of all the jamming. Also browing clips atatch¸to the floor plate and aren`t detatchable. Spent some money and bought a Benelli R1 30-06. The best thing I have ever shot. Try one and you`ll will understand!

Not very tactical but Ruger carbine 44mag. Pleasure to carry all day,and will make deer black bears dead fast! handles and points like a dream!

ruger 44mag

That"s the gun I am trying to replace. I have an old school ruger 44 mag from the 70's. It's still in great shape but, Won't feed after first shot anymore, can't get anyone here in London to fix... man it was a great shooter.
I'm going to miss her.:(
