Semi-Auto Hunting Rifles

Yes, everyone and their dog on the internet only takes one shot. But if you had to, what semi-auto hunting rifle would be the cat's meow? To get things started, we'll say we want

1) quick follow up shots
2) 1 moa or better
3) bear solutions
4) reliable (nothing is as reliable as great grampy's old .30-30, we know)
5) gun under 10lbs no optic; 12lbs with optic max, though lighter is better.

I am thinking of getting one in .308. Options on the table: FNAR, ATRS MH, Browning BAR (maybe .30-06, 300 wsm, 300 wm), Norc M305 (but may be a bit heavy). So, what are the go-to's out there?

i use the benelli r1 30-06, very smooth, good for sighting when shooting in the prairies if additional shots required, son uses a new browning bar 270, very accurate, both of these are excellent, it all depends how it feels when sighting or handling it and changing mags, safety, etc., back in the day, remingtons were common and are still in use through out the prairies, get the one that fits, good luck!!
 
I will be giving ATRS modern Hunter a try this year I have two uppers to play with 338fed and 6.5CM and soon a 223 Modern Varmiter for small deer
You can bet your life I will still keep T/C prohunter handy as backup just in case things bad
it's good to have a good old singl shot makes a handy back up rifle

Those two always seemed to work without issue. I have my Dads Win M-100 that he bought the first year they came out. It will work great as long as the gun, clips and ammo are kept meticulously clean. Let any of the semi auto's or there mags get dirty and you are asking for issues. But over the years the HK,s and the Ruger,s in my observation appeared to give the most reliable service.

I have had 2 ruger 44,s both the tube fed mag models. Stripped and cleaned and they both jammed on me with at some point. I had better luck with a old remington 742 in 308.

import out of Europe , I was going to do this a couple years ago , then I had a temporary shift in my financial priorities and I had to put it off . the brief phone call I made to browning about this sounded like the biggest issue was just waiting for it to be brought into the country .
 
I have had a Bar Safari II and a few Remington semi's. Never a problem with any of them. Prefer the Bar operating system for maintenance. The Remingtons get a bad rap frim what I can tell. They are actually quite handy to carry and shoot.

Edit: I forgot to mention the Norc M305 that I had for a few years. Tuned it up into a half decent shooter and carried it on one deer hunting trip. It felt like a heavy clumsy weapon. Traded it away, haven't really looked back. It was better at the range than in the bush in my experience.

I think this is an ammo issue or shooter. I've not really shot mine for groups but I've gotten 6" at 200 with Chinese fmj ... good enough. I'll be checking all my xcrs with hornady ammo and shoot for groups. I think they're plenty accurate for semis as intended with reasonable ammo fit for purposes. I have seen sub moa with hanloads. Check the xcr forums.... but we're also talking the new generations.

It seems hit and miss with the XCR's honestly. Some seem great, others seem meh. As a design that has less emphasis on accuracy, it's pretty good, but I would not buy one with the sole purpose of it being a DMR as it's not a for sure your going to get one that shoots well from what I have read.
 
FNAR - if you can find one.
meets and exceeds all the criteria.
I have a great scope on mine (IOR-Valdada 3-25x50) and it's gets boring pretty quick at the range shooting 1" groups at 200 yards... (with 168 gr Berger VLD)
 
I just had my MH out today then pulled out Winchester low wall and T/C ProHunter
I realise I like my single shot rifles so much more so now I thinking of getting rid of my MH and MV wen its finish
both are #29 I have not made up my mined yet im still just thinking about it
 
So,that new-to-me Rem 7400 .308 that I mentioned in the previous post went to the range today. If there was anything wrong with it that the previous owner told be about,the thorough cleaning and scope remount solved the issues. This rifle had less than a box of shells through it. For sitting in a safe for 16 years,this rifle shoots and operates like a new unit. I'm really impressed. I just might hang on to it and use it for a while.
