Is there such a thing as, for lack of a better description, "limp wristing" a semi rifle? The reason I ask is I had a 14 year old out shooting the FX-9 today and he had a fte on 3/4 mags he fired. When I shot it it ran fine. I didn't think of this until I was home so I wasn't able to put my theory to the test. Thought?

Yeah that is a thing. It happens with one if my semi 22's when my daughter shoots it, also a semi auto shotgun that with real light loads it wont cycle when holding it. But put the butt stock up to something solid, functions fine every time.

Yup, just like the frame of a semi-auto pistol has to be firmly gripped to allow for the slide to retract for its full length of travel, a semi-auto rifle needs to be firmly held to allow the bolt to move fully rearward. If it's not, the rifle and bolt will move rearwards together.

Yeah for blowback rifles/PCC's it can be a problem for a lighter person or younger kid. Could try getting a rubber bumper for the stock so they feel more comfortable getting the rifle in nice and tight to their shoulder!

limp-shouldered - tell him to pull the butt into the shoulder firmly, and get a boxer stance. If that doesn't cure it, it's not a recoil problem. Mag seating or loading, perhaps.
