Semi auto RPD ?

7.62x39 RPD's have a barrel length of 550mm and semi auto RPD's are sold in the US. They are not related to the AK family, and as they were designed before the end of WW2 there would be no restrictions on the length of the belt.

A non restricted RPD is my dream gun, would it be possible to import an RPD ?
 
Considering that the receiver of a RPD began life as a full-auto, they would likely be considered CA by the RCMP and therefore a prohibited weapon and therefore not importable. I don't know even if the US would allow the export even if the conversion was classified as legal in Canada.

My SWAG? Not likely.
 
Pretty sure its a pre-'46 design, but the RCMP has already used thier powers of arbitrary declarations and claimed that its post-'46 design and a belt limit would apply. If it was a newly made semi-auto reciever, it should be non-restricted. Im sure the RCMP would play all the tricks in thier book to prevent it from being allowed into Canada though:mad:

According to Wikipedia it was designed in 1943. Maybe Tiriaq has the answer to the import issue, but would a certain sten gun builder build receivers for them, this is the question :)

I talked to the RCMP Firearms lab. They are non restricted.

1) A new manufacture semi automatic only receiver
2) A RPD parts kit
3) Belt fed meets cut off requirements for being capped. No belt capacity.

Get your poo together on it and request info for yourself. If I had the money, I would have one by now, however, a parts kit and receiver is around 2000.00$ from what I remember pricing out, and finding the receiver is that hard part. They DO make them though.

I know there are lots of signs this would be a CA, but from the lab itself, they say NR. Getting everything exported would more than likely be a pain but doable. If you get a lead on a receiver, please PM me, I'll buy one now and do the build later. Gunbroker has some parts kits, belts etc.
 
I hate to be the stick in the mud, however this topic was already brought up back in January on the Tactical Imports business section, and after some bickering back and forth between members on status/legality Tac.Imports quoted (cannot direct quote cause the thread is locked up)

"State Deptment won't allow export of belt feds anymore unfortunately. Since that is the only semi-auto RPD being made at this time a semi-auto RPD is a no-go at the moment"

It may be Non-Res here... (Id never hold my breath on it however; until its confirmed in the RCMP FRT Database; as the only entries are FA & CA); we cannot LEGALLY have these receivers in Canada; unless someone machines Canadian made Semi-Auto receivers... thats the only way around this one unfortunately...
 
Of course, it would always be wise of us Canucks to not deal with the US StateDept due to the gross amount of regulations they have on almost everything/anything in the market these days :D
