My favorite " hollywood " pistol whipping was in Goodfellas where Liotta beats on his girlfriends ( later to be his wife's ) neighbour . Based on that I'd go with something small like the revolver he used , kind of like a pair of brass knuckles for the Palm of the hand .

Colt SAA is the classic pistol whipping device. Back in the old west, the sheriff would either shoot you or clock you with his pistol. They did not use billy clubs.

Not true - one of the early Dodge City marshals used a sawed-off pool cue to knock heads and hardly ever carried a gun. I'm thinking Dave Tutt but I might be wrong.

Using a handgun to dent heads is just as likely to ruin the gun (bent frame, barrel out of alignment, etc) which is what saps/jacks were made for...
