3 gun match, 3" chamber semi with extended mag tube holding 8 rounds on board vs. 3 1/2" chamber holding 8 rounds (just for sake of argument) are you going to send the 3" guy/gal home if they dump 8 before a reload?

Has anyone had any direct experience with a CFO on this?

Reason I am digging into this is because functionally there is no difference and for competition, as a match official I am not super interested in checking to see who has what kind of chamber, but I do know some that are and it just adds more "gamey" to an already gamey prone game.

IMO, it's not the chamber that counts, it's the receiver the mag is attached to.

A 3 1/2" receiver has a magazine designed for 3 1/2" shells attached to it, regardless of the barrel currently installed.

It's still a 3" or 3 1/2" receiver without the markings.

For example, all Versa Max receivers are 3 1/2". In fact, the manual that came with my VMT says specifically that all VMs are chambered for 3 1/2".

Is the OP asking anyone in particular whether they would send someone away for having a potentially prohibited firearm, or just thinking out loud?

If someone thinks that one round extra capacity at the start signal is going to make a difference in the match, they aren't gong to win anyway.
If someone is willing to play with a prohibited firearm in public, all the power to them, hate to be them if they ever get caught, because that's likely the last time they'll be playing with firearms.

But the FRT for VMT shows 3" instead of 3.5".

Does that make the magazine tube designed for 3" rather than 3.5".

What if I stick a 3.5" marked turkey barrel on or ream out the chamber or put a VMT barrel on a Sportsman? The FRT is irrelevant to legal capacity.

supermag

I have 4 shotguns in my gun case. Not one has the chambering marked on the receiver.

So a couple of key things:
A magazine is not park of the gun - hens why we can have 10 round pistol mags in a rifle and why we can't have 10 round rifle mags. It is the MAG that is the issue, not the gun not the ammo. So when I do put the 30 rounder in the gun I have inserted something that is clearly a no no. Where it gets interesting is when I put the 5 round Boewolf mag in knowing that it is holding more than 5 .223. But here again it is the MAG, the separate part of the gun that is at issue.
We tried to get away with more than 10 9mm rounds in .40 mags and that didn't fly. So why does it work with stuffing more than 5 little shells in a shotgun?

If the gun is not a 3 1/2" chamber, you best make sure you can only fit 5 3" shells into the magazine. Having a larger magazine would be being a possession of a prohibited device. Only if the gun has the larger chamber can you also have a longer magazine.

As much as I don't want to say this, but should it really not simply be about the number of rounds loaded?
The point, doesn't a 5 round 3.5" tube suddenly become "prohibited" when you stuff 6 2 3/4 in it?

doc, no. Think of the magazine rules relating to using different ammo than a magazine was meant for. It's allowed in those cases. Beowolf AR mags, 40sw handgun mags holding 9mm, same as a semi shotgun 3.5" holding 7 2.75" shells.

semi shotgun chambered in 3.5". - 5 rounds of 3.5". you can however shove 2+3/4" shells in and if more than 5 fit you are fine.
semi rifle. 5 center fired rounds of the type that the rifle is chambered for in the mag that belongs to that rifle. If your rifle happens to be able to accept a different firearms magazine ( different marked caliber that just happens to handle another type of round or a 10 round pistol mag) good to go.
Center fired pistol semi. - 10 rounds unless another firearms magazine happens to fit that pistol which may be of another caliber but can also handle that's semi pistol ammo.

Is it Wednesday already!?! Lol

On a serious note... We never hear from the people who professionally compete in 3 gun matches. Both my daughter and I do but we are past the point of explaining ourselves. Someone else chime in.
