I am quite new to the handgun game so any input on this question is greatly appreciated.

All things equal ( ammo, shooter, barrel length etc...) which is more acurate ? Revolver or semi auto pistol ?

There's no hard and fast answer, just because it can vary so much from one example to the next (and that's just speaking of maximum theoretical accuracy, with the firearm in a mechanical rest); when you add a shooter into the equation, it changes again.

Revolver = longer (sometimes MUCH longer) sight plane = more accurate for most people to shoot.

I'm very new to automatic pistols, and damn are they tricky to shoot consistently. Have to have your eye, arms, legs, all lined up properly to get shot-to-shot accuracy. Feels a lot like working on a golf swing, to tell you the truth;-)

The fixed barrel of a revolver tends to make them more accurate than a semi but I much perfer a semi.

I shoot revolver better than semi, they have different fun and you really need one of each.

One of each?

I would have to say a revolver. More stable mechanism for bullet to travel.

I like both, I have a 1911 Commander and a Ruger GP161, but I'm more of a revolver guy (Gen X'er too!). I like the visual mechanics of it, to see things move as I pull the trigger slowly, and the feedback I get though my hand. I'd say looks are quite important too, I like a full underlug over the standard pipe barrels which don't appeal to me. I also like owning a "Magnum" calibre :) Most plastic guns do NOTHING for me at all, a feeling that's stuck with me since I picked up a glock while I was taking my RPAL classes. Umm...and ya I find the revolver more accurate too, though I'm still a new shooter, who tends to run on at the mouth sometimes.

I agree with Trigun. Semi's and revolvers provide a different kind of fun. I like my semi's for the repetitive non stop fun. I'm pretty good with my .22 semi auto and I love to do a little rapid fire with my 9mm semi's.
I also really like my .357 revolver since it's pretty accurate and I like shooting it single action.
You will have to try both to decide which you like the most

I think that in terms of mechanical accuracy the revolver with a fixed barrel is generally more accurate than a semi-auto, especially if the semi-auto has some kind of barrel linkage. However, unless you plan to shoot from a Ransom Rest all of the time, you can't only consider mechanical accuracy. The shooter has to shoot the gun, and there's a reason why top target shooters don't shoot revolvers. It's just more challenging to shoot a revolver double-action in rapid fire (five shots in ten seconds) than it is a single-action semi-auto with a good trigger.

So you need to think about how you're going to use the gun.

A revolver shooting single-action (cocked) normally has a great trigger and accuracy. Shooting a revolver double-action is tougher to do well, compared to a single-action semi-auto. Compared to a double-action semi-auto which may also have a long heavy pull, the scales are more balanced.

My 2 cents...

The only real way to test the accuracy potential on each type is from a fixed rest. Not many people can even shoot accurately as their handgun's potential. That's true for wheelguns +/or semi's.

But on the question... standard, out of the box I'd give the wheelgun the edge in the accuracy dept.

You need several of each. If you go semi auto, some have barrel conversions so you can shoot 22 cheap at the range and then drop the 40 back in for more serious firepower. The most accurate revolver I own is a Dan Wesson 357 with 8" barrel. It has a tensioned barrel and it is deadly accurate. It also shoots 357 maximum so great for handgun hunting south of the border.

Revolver vs Pistol Preferences ?

.... It really comes down to personal preferences and the intended use. The likes of the late, Bill Jordan, were incredibly fast and accurate, with a double action S&W, and for years the high quality revolvers were common on the target ranges, (.22 Olympic style matches, and .45 Service type excluded) ..with the current high levels and development of the semi-auto pistol, all that has changed, and certainly, from the hand-held positions, fit to the shooter has become more important than any inherent or perceived , accuracy advantage of one of the other . Having shot and carried both, damned if I know which I prefer !!! ..... David K.

I started out on wheelguns way back when. Upside is you don't have to chase brass. Downside is that they just aren't as 'fun' as semi's. Once I found the 1911 in .45ACP I've never looked back.
