With a revolver, you'll never have to worry about Fail to Feeds, Fail to Eject etc.. Revolvers are much simpler and more reliable. Easier to maintain etc.. If your completly new to guns, i would suggest a revolver. Accuracy wise, that's pretty much been answered already in the thread. I would suggest for your first gun something like a Ruger Single Six in .22lr . I have one and it's great fun to shoot. From there, i'd probably get some 9mm semi. Lots to choose from. After that, the gun world is your oyster.

I like shooting revolvers but I hate cleaning them......

You got that right.
It's even more of a challenge to keep a brushed stainless one looking like new.
Time to disassemble and clean 1911's: 15 minutes

Time to totally clean my DW revolver: at least 30 minutes

Sure everyone wants a lot of guns but they don't consider the down side. Deciding what guns should I take to the range today? When I built the safe I never thought it would ever be too small.

As far as accuracy you can get accurate semi-autos and accurate revolvers. Typically good revolvers will give better accuracy at a lower cost.

+1.....and semi's are way more fun to shoot.

I don't know, the 2 foot flame out of my 686 shooting nice mag loads is pretty fun.......especially at the indoor ranges BOOOOOOMMM!

It depends what you want it for. In a panic situation, a revolver is better only because if it fails to fire, you just pull the trigger again rather than going throufh the clearing drill on a semi-auto.

Both can be very precise. More likely than not, they will be more precise than you will be. So it comes down to wich fits your hand best. Personnaly I find revolvers ergonomically weird, and don't like shooting them.

Actually I think it's 2 to 1 in favor of the semi's. Most of the double action revolvers are S&W. Two Ruger Blackhawks for cowboy action shooting (stored in my gun cart), and a Ruger Old Army. I typically only have good revolvers but I tend to have a bunch of non-target shooting semi-auto guns. I'm still not sure why I have three P-38s. Because there is more variety in design with semi-autos I have more of them. I've a few single shot guns as well.

I have hearing on March 30 on 12(6) prohibited handgun registration/licensing. If that goes my way (and I'm real confident it will) I have to make room for another 30 handguns I have bought but not been able to get transferred yet. Only four of the thirty are revolvers.

I think it's easier to get an accurate revolver out of the box, I've seen a good shooter manage 2" at 50 yards with a Chiefs 1 7/8" (this wasn't me pulling the trigger). I think this is because the movement cycle in a revolver is much more gentle than an auto, also mechanically speaking revolvers are capable of higher rates of fire than autos (no need to wait for the slide to come back into lock up). I think it's easier to shoot a semi well because the shooter isn't required to generate the same amount of force while keeping his hands still.

I just got a 6" 586, and had fun comparing it to my CZ 75. I still have to put both on a benchrest to compare the groupings, but I'd say the 586 is inherantly more accurate- longer barrel, smoooother trigger pull DA or SA, more weight. Plus I read that wadcutters is, for whatever reason, very accurate ammo for the revolver.

Ditto on the hate to clean though, it feels like I'm cleaning 6 semi's.

A gun is a gun is a gun .. if you know what you are doing it shouldn't matter what you have in your hands. I personally own 4 revolvers and 5 semi's they are all near and dear to my heart in very different ways.

handguns will become addictive .. first gun an auto loader .. carry one at work wanted more practice .. wow look the guys at the club are shooting PPC .. hmm need a revolver nice GP100 in stainless with a 6 in barrel .. whats that .. you have a snubby catagory as well .. guess i need the 686 with a 2 1/2 inch barrel .. god that redhawk is nice .. guess i need one of those just cause .. what you say .. we are shooting .22 for DCRA mail in shoot .. okay i'll get a 22 .. and it goes on and on .. don't want any more guns .. don't let your buddies talk you into trying their guns .. next thing you know .. you sound like a seagull in finding nemo .. mine! mine! mine!
