As a somewhat new member, ive searched through forum after forum and page after page and the search function and have yet to come across any number of people shooting the Sendero. Tons of people seem to be shooting Savages, which is weird to me because i grew up shooting Remington, but to each their own i suppose. Just curious how many of us are out there and what kind of setup you have. Im currently building my gun up. Starting with a 300 rum and just tryign to save up for a decent rings, base and scope.

I am playing around with a Sendero in 7mm Saum, the first reloads I tried shot cloverleafs, very impressed, I'm using a Bushnell 6500 scope on it, the caliber is just not my cup of tea. I will probably convert it to 7mm Br. in the future if I don't ditch it. I just don't see myself using a barrel burner that makes alot of noise, and cost alot to shoot, to punch holes in paper. Any gun that I carry around hunting that weighs that much would have to be a big bored Sharps or some such.

I started shooting with a 7mm sendero. It worked great. I have since rebarreled it, Nightforce scope and base with TPS ring and the factory HS stock.

Sendero

I have two a 7 Rem mag and 300 Win mag, the 7 Rem mag is accurate with almost anything I reload for it ,have not shot the 300 yet. The 300 is one of the first ones made, I believe it was made in 1994 almost new, if it is anything like the 7 Rem I will be happy.

I have not shot it enough because I keep buying more guns, 7MM. I love it so far.

I've had a few Sendero's.....Good place to start.
They all were capable of better than 3/4 minute accuracy.
Lots of 1/2 inch groups and a few in the 1/4 inch range...Most people would call them 1/2 minute guns....Not me.

The 300Rum will not help you learn the long range thing very well....I'd stay away from it. Go 300 win if you want a 300mag. The 300 Rum ballistics look impressive, but trust me when I tell you it is not for you.
All of my long range stuff wears Nightforce...The scope is key to your success at extreme range...Buy the best you can afford. If your on a tight budget I would talk to Jerry (mysticplayer here) and ask him what the best inexpensive scope is.....He was talking about Sightron the other day.

FWIW
I'd rather eat worms than own a Savage. :D

I puchased new an orginal 300 RUM Sendero SF after hearing they were going to be discontinued and then a long, lengthy search to find one. Right from the get go, it shot 1/2 MOA or better with my handloads, and did so with the first powder and bullet combination I tried. At first I found the recoil to be big, and I added a removeable muzzle brake. However, after some practice, the brake came off and the recoil increasingly became a non-issue for me. But what I found is that for the type of hunting I do, the sendero was too heavy (10.5 lbs scoped and slinged).

I now shoot a 8.5 lb (all up with scope and sling) without a brake (but custom LOP and 1" pac dec pad) and it too is totally manageable for me, and in fact, I have recorded some of my best groups at 700 m (2.5" 3-shot) with this lightweight 300 RUM. This rifle has also racked up an impressive string it's first (2008) hunting seson, accounting for my biggest elk, biggest mule deer and biggest whitetail ever.

Handling magnum recoil only takes practice for it to be manageable. Unfortunately, most don't invest in the range time to get a handle on it and become proficient with it, and so forever naysay the RUM:rolleyes:.

Remington 700 SFII in 300 Win Mag. with a 4200 6 - 24 x 40 with side focus. Last time out I had 4 under one inch at 300 yds., and the fitfh made it into a 2.8. Using 72.0 grains of Re22 and 190 MK moly.

Well, before I picked up my 300 rum, I shot a custom 700 chambered in 300 weatherby with a synthetic stock, bipod and a 3-9x40 vari x iii. It weighed in at about 12 lbs and I carried that around the bush with me all the time. I'm not to concerend about the recoil cause it can't be all that much more then that 300 I was shooting before.

I also have a Sendaro in 300 rum and had it braked before I picked up. It is a removable thread on brake and it makes the rifle a kitten to shoot. I would compare the recoil to my 243 micro medalion. But that said it is retarded loud tou don't want to shoot this thing with out hearing protection. I bought a set of the Walkers in the ear electronic ear plugs to keep the little hearing I have left. I fitted mine with a Leupold 4.5x14x56 vxl with the Boone and Crocket retical and it is great long range deer sniping rifle but you don't want to be far from the truck.

I have a 700P in 300 RUM, a Mk V in 300 Wby, and three or four 300 Win Mags (and a 308 Norma mag and a 300 H&H). The RUM is quite a bit more abusive then the others, by a noticeable margin. You'd have to ask someone who knows me personally, but recoil rarely bothers me. The RUM is about the only gun I own that I am going to put a break on. FWIW - dan

Sorry Knoc...Didn't know you already owned it.

Once you get a brake on it your only problem will be in getting enough practice rounds down range....Without melting the barrel in the process.
Your scope requirement also increases along with the recoil.

FYI Other than short distance shots and breaking a barrel in 180 grain bullets are useless in a 300 Ultra.
Other than 3 inches more drop a 300Wby or Win will better your 500 yard ballistics with a slippery 200 or 210 grain bullet.....Don't mean to pi$$ bad news on your head.....look it up for yourself.

The 300 Ultra shines with those bullets....I would use nothing else.

oh, i know the bigger bullets perform way better then these lighter ones. Their BCs are must better. Im just gonna start with what i have already and then burn them off and go bigger. Probably end up with the 208 A-Max or a 210 berger. You have to remember. Im going to shoot everything with this rifle. Coyotes, Whitetails, Mules, Elk, Moose and maybe a bear this year if i can find one in a decent color phase. this is my first new rifle and first Ultramag so everything will be a learning process for me.
