Sequence of events when buying restricted

If we throw ALL the legal hoops up to be seen, and all the laws out there right off, it would be a wonder that anyone would even bother. You have to admit it can be very overwhelming for someone just getting into the sport. There is lots to learn if you take an interest in all the laws and I think putting too much regulation out too soon coud deter many from going ahead with their plans.
Keep it simple to start and they can learn as they go how convoluted the regs are.
I have a refusal letter (Ont CFO) from way back that says along the lines of, "since you don't own restricted we will not issue an Att. Let us know when you buy something". (paraphrased obviously). Law? No. Policy that could deter someone? Yes.
I'm just saying we can stop scaring people with all the regs. Let them get started and they'll hit the different stuff as they go along. They don't need to know all the details right off.

Perhaps.. but then that is all the more reason for us to have good stickies for the newbs... and for those of us that know the hoops etc to help educated those that do not. There is a reason why myself, Cyclone and others take on these fights and help spread the info as best we can. And it's not for our own entertainment :)

As for the letter you have.. that right there is what is needed for this sort of fight. And for those that don't have a res yet but have their RPAL they can hop into the fight as well. Only with NUMBERS can we win.. and the more we have on our side the more the CFO's will crap their pants.

Ultimately it comes down to sugar coating for newbs is not doing them any favors... but giving them facts, info and help with it all certainly does!

Shalimar, I suspect you DO spread the info for your own entertainment :) but that's fine. We have different sales techniques. You're a hard sell and I'm a soft sell. No disgrace in either and that way we get ALL the bases covered.

LOL

No sorry not for my entertainment.. though I do debate other issues on here that could at times be classified that way. When spreading info on topics such as this though I do it because it needs to be done. We all know the vast majority won't get off their ass.. even if given the info.. so if not me then who will fight?

And yes I'm a hard sell.. I call em as I see em and don't spend time kissing the CFO's ass.

Dialup still? wtf are you stuck? Hell? :p

Closer than you I bet. It sure makes the Girls with Guns thread a real trial in patience.

Love it when bell calls to upgrade my internet service. They get all excited when I agree then you can hear the letdown when they find it can't be done here.

I'd say to PM me your info.. but if you are dealing with Hell Canada at all you are already lost.. :p

Take a look at Epps's buy forms for restricteds your range/club membership no. is required and it's the same for most dealers.

nah, me and my dad bought 4 restricted firearms from Epps before we joined any range, the 1st time they didnt even ask what range I belonged to.

the 2nd time they asked and told me that I cant buy it before joining a range, but they phoned the CFO to get it transferred, and they told the CFO that I have INTENT to join a range and no further questions/problems

Thanks for all your opinions. I read them all and also did some external research and this is what I concluded:

First off, isn't Possession and Acquisition License just that? - a license that enables you to possess and acquire firearms?

Nowhere on your PAL application does it say that you have to join a range.
Nowhere on your PAL does it state what club or range you're a member of, or that you have to join the club at all. Furthermore, you license is good for 5 years and your range membership is typically 1 year. How's that work? Plus, can't you join and immediately cancel? Is your range membership a required document that you must keep together with your license, your registration and your ATT? Where does it say it is?

Now, what if you don't want to go to the range at all and you do not want to shoot your guns at all either? You are a collector and keep them in a safe? Do you have to join the range for that too? I sure hope not! The only indoor range here in Vancouver charges over $500/year for full membership... WTF???

So I'm fairly certain that to simply purchase a handgun no gunclub/range membership is required. However, I'm not so clear about the Long Term ATT. To get an ATT you have to specify where you intend to take your handgun and if one of them is "a range" it makes sense that you have a membership or belong to a club. Still, you can just visit and pay the drop-in fee, so technically you can shoot at the range without membership. Or you could cancel immediately after receiving the transportation permit, or let your membership expire after a year - while your ATT is good for five..

Now I'm not familiar with all the intricacies of the law that pertains to this issue, but if the rules are vague or unclear or confusing common sense and logic should prevail.
As soon as I get my restricted PAL I will request a handgun registration to be transferred in my name ( before joining a range) and this way I will experience the outcome first hand. I will let you know how it goes.

Your range will apply for your ATT for you. Just got mine, good for 5 years. But if I leave the range, they can and probably will cancel the ATT. It just takes one 5 minute call for them to cancel it.

Not sure how it would work for a drop in range.

You do not need to have them do it.. regardless of the BS from the CFO. The ATT app process is intended for the RPAL holder to be able to do it themselves/. The CFO attempting to force you to do otherwise with their BS "policy" is NOT LAW.. and again they are being called on it. The more of us getting into that fight the better off we all are.

I'm curious, what did they tell you?

The lady on the phone said it isn't an issue in Ontario. She assured me the transfer would go through if i bought a restricted before i joined a club. Not sure of the other provinces. Give them a call it was painless and i'm glad i did. Also confirmed if the package is taken to the post office then a simple phone call to the cfo would get me the att required to bring it home legally.

"....putting too much regulation out too soon coud deter many......"

I think that is exactly the motive behind most of our firearms laws......especially those concerning restricted firearms/ATT's/etc.

I'm in Ontario, and when I buy a restricted, I tell them that I intend to join a range/club in the future. Which I do. When? I don't know. :)
