Serial numbers added after the fact?

Hey!

So i just got a old shotgun from the early 1900s that i am planning on refinishing a bit.

I noticed on the side of the receiver there is a number glued/stuck in the side.

To me that doesn't look like it was something from 1905 lol it does not exactly fit with the rest of the gun.

Could this have been added more recently, for registration purposes? Now since there is no registration, i am really itching to remove it.

Any ideas what it could be?

Sure be a shame if it fell off.
One of my old Cooeys had a sticker at one time. Don't know what happened to it.

Since numerous firearms did not have serial numbern, when c68 came into force. The solution was to issue sticker registration numbers and attach them to the rifles. I most cases the stickers fell off rather easily. The sticker on your rifle is only reference to the dead long gun registry.

I have a bunch of them they were never used. Sold one Cooey and gave the guy a choice of what number he wanted.

I wondered what those stickers were. I have an older Mossberg .410 that had one. It fell of while cleaning a couple months ago.

Still have one here somewhere. How anyone thought an adhesive would work when exposed to various solvents is beyond reason. Must have been a liberal's brainfart.
