I need a new barrel for my series 70. Will any old 1911a1 barrel fit or do I need to start looking for a series 70 barrel.

They are the same and interchangeable but because of tolerances , fitting may be needed for optimum performance and accuracy.

Any standard 1911 barrel with the link & pin set up will probably work. You will find the older GI barrels probably aren't "throated" as much as your Series 70 barrel. As stated above, some minor fitting may be required for optimum performance.

Armco has some Norinco 1911 barrels for sale on his site if you are not a purist. They are good barrels & will no doubt work in your Series 70.

"Real deal" Colt barrels do come up for sale on the EE from time to time but you will probably 'pay' for them...........;)

Picked up this Colt Series 70 National Match .45ACP barrel off the EE a couple years back:

I used a Nork barrel in my 1927 Colt, worked just fine. They are decent barrels, completely chromed so they will last a very long time.

I stand to be corrected here, but doesn't a series 70 barrel have a different profile near the muzzle to cater for the spring bushing ?

If that is so then for a standard barrel to work you would also have to change the bushing.
