Thanks to Bolivar, I'm on the way to joining in the fun this year. I've got a 16" carbine and I'm looking to add an optic to it. He's given me suggestions but I thought I would reach out to the other vets here to see what you use and why. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys and shoot safe, shoot straight, shoot often;)

I am using a Leupold Mark IV 2 1/2 - 8. Excellent optics, reliable adjustments, useful power range.

Vortex PST 1-4x is an affordable variable power that's worked well for me so far. There are other (and arguably better) options available in 1-4x, but they cost more.
2.5-10x is something I'd like to try, but it's not in the budget this year.

Happy Hunting!

Was this choice a progression? Switch from something else? What had you tried before?

Started with a Falcon Menace 1 1/2-5. Thought this was a great scope. Did well with it. Then it tanked on me while doing the walkback zeros at the Nationals. The FM 4.5-14 on my precision rifle let me down the next year during the Nationals. Never again for FM. Replaced the 1 1/2-5 FM with a Leupold 1 1/2-5 with target turrets added. Dandy scope, still have it. Came across the Mk. IV when it was on sale. It is outstanding.
A 2 1/2-10 Nightforce compact is something else, maybe a best choice, but the price is up there.

Thanks guys. I doubt very much that I can afford a NF Tiriaq. Would be nice. Maybe once I can prove to myself that I'm any good at this. Will do some research on the Vortex. Thanks guys.

I think there should be a service rifle classification where 4X is the max in which case I love my OS4 (with a 568, 575,576/600 last season) and think it is the cats a$$ of issued optics. For open class I would look at the 4-16 Vortex Viper HS-T in an ADM mount which I am pretty sure Longshot has used while winning nationals 2 years in a row as it offers frighteningly good value.

Gunnerlove,

Do you feel at all limited by the lack of an adjustable turret? Or are the gradations on your reticle adequate? The OS4 certainly has my eye. I'd look at an OS3 too but then I'd be teased for poking like Bolivar.

Cheers

OS3 is simpler to adjust for elevation and windage IMO as long as you get the B model.

Vortex 2.5-10X is similar money though. Hence why I suggested that for you.

After my thread last year on a similar topic, I went with the PST 2.5-10, so I'd agree with the Vortex recommendation.

I also run carbine like yourself and find a 1 to 4 power scope a great choice for SR. 500m and that figure 12 is plenty visible, and at 25m you don't struggle finding the target. Sure, I lusted for higher magnification, but after speaking to guys who know what the f#(k their doing, I stayed put with my old Vortex Viper PST 1-4 on an ADM mount. Sure the same power in a Nightforce NXS would be my dream, but I'm a family man, and maybe this year I'll wear my prescription glasses to make the Vortex seem like "better glass". Hope to see you at Connaught this summer.

Pat
