Service Rifle rigs

Hi all,

I am looking to shoot SR in BC this year and just wondering what type of rigs people have to shoot open class? Do you have any photos you can share to get an idea what is out there?

Thanks

Currently you are either on duty and shooting issued gear in military class, or in open class.
I think a third class (Service Rifle) needs to be added, no brakes, 20" barrel max and 4x optic max. This would allow people with service rifle clones to compete against guys with the same.
Open is where people running DMRs should be put.

I was just reading over the rules, looks like there are 3 classes:

1. Service Class - duty rifles?
2. Open Class - non duty rifles such as M14, DMR etc
3. Lee enfield

I was looking to to shoot in open and was just wondering what guys are using as rigs for that.

Thanks

I'm not in BC, but for ORA service rifle matches, I run a Swiss Arms Black Special flat top with Leupold Mark 4 MR/T 2.5-8. I started off the season using a 1-4 Vortex razor, but decided to move up to something with higher magnification, a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10, but found that I didn't use it at 10x except during the 500 yard deliberates, so I moved to something slightly smaller/lighter.

Please bear with our pesky questions-
So, which "class" did they put you in (while using the Swiss Arms)? Would that be "open class" in ORA? or "service class?"

Service class--for serving members of the military, or for those who just use AR's ?

There aren't different classes, just Service Conditions, rifle and CQB. Guys in the military shot along with everyone else. I've seen a couple guys use M14's and XCR's, one other with a Swiss Arms and ACOG, but most use AR's in various configurations, from a Norc 14.5" with irons to fancy space guns with high powered scopes. All matches are based off CFSAC matches.

Yeah, in Ontario us Civi's can run whatever and we are in the same class at the military guys. CF shooters, shooting issued weapons and optics, won every match last season I think. I can't recall 100%.

Interesting! I would've thought that "spacegun" types would : a) Win most of the time , and b) Be in their own catagory (for fairness).

Nice to see that it doesn't seem to make a difference on the scoreboard (yet). Although you'd think sooner or later someone will kick ass with one of these (space) rifles--which would raise questions about a different class.

I've always liked service rifle for the fact that you conform/adapt yourself to the issued rifle, and not the other way around (adjustable stocks, handgaurds etc.,)

There are a couple of ways to look at space guns. Many of the top civies at national have them....but are they the top civies because of them or are they just top because they are the best shooters and run space guns cause they happen to want to/can.

I'm not sure what the answer is 100%.

There is an argument that there is certainly a perception that equipment makes a big difference so for that reason different classes based on equipment does make some sense. Less intimidating for new shooters if they can shoot in a "lower" class perhaps?

Oh, it already does happen. People are quick to point to the equipment when it does, but quicker to ignore when it doesn't. There have also been a few good CF shooters that tried running "spaceguns" and ended up doing worse than they do with their C7s, but nobody will ever make a big deal out of that...

I'd probably feel that way too if the issued equipment fit me. Maybe the "average" sized people should be made to adapt to what fits the extremes, just to "walk a mile in the other guy's shoes". The last time I handed a 5'8" tall guy my rifle with the grip that fits my hand, he couldn't reach the trigger... Litterally, the tip of his finger didn't reach it.

Lol, Excellent points above! We'll just have to have you all genetically modified to fit the "issue" pieces :)

One last question regarding trigger pull weight: My (older) rule book says a service rifle trigger is to be "no less than 2.5 kg". A lot of spaceguns, DMR's and custom AR's have much lighter aftermarket triggers on them.

Has this rule been changed for owners of these rifles? (i.e. are they allowed to shoot with the lighter triggers that come with some of these rifles?)
Or do they just slap a standard AR lower/swap back to the standard (heavier) triggers for events like DCRA or BCRA service rifle?

For 2013 trigger pull weights for semi-auto rifles at NSCC was reduced to 2 Kg. This is checked for Stage II of the Service Rifle portion at the National match.

As for adapting to the rifle, adjustable butt stocks are now standard issue on CF rifles and that is the most common adjustment needed to fit the widest range of shooter sizes. As for Kombs grip.....that's just wack crazy man, but hey, it works well for him so that's cool.

ORA is still using the 2.5 Kg spec.

It's wise to set the trigger to at least 0.25 Kg (0.5 lbs) over what the spec is since lubricants, heat and spring relaxation are likely to cause the trigger pull to lighten a bit from where you adjust it to.

Very good point. I found having my trigger pull tested to be a bit nerve wracking. My weight is well over the min but still, the chance of getting tossed cause your trigger goes wonky......uggg.
I did observe one that was right on the ragged edge at NSCC last year. The shooter looked a bit worried.

I set mine to the ORA spec (with a good margin), then I don't need to worry. I don't bother trying to knock it down for NSCC because I don't find it makes a meaningful difference and I think its poor practice to change something if you've been using it like that all summer long in every match and practice session.

^^I have a Swiss Arms as well. The factory trigger pull seems too light for the criteria above (maybe it's just me). Have you been able to measure it?

Edit: Never mind. Just checked it. The last stage is very nice/light (which is what I remember about this rifle), but the weight of the other stages make it over the pull spec I'm sure.
