hey everyone i just got my enfield no4 mk1 a few weeks ago and have a question about setting the bolt. there the small piece that holds the bolt in the reciever when you open or close it, the same piece you need to turn to the left if you wish to remove the bolt entirly. and by either turning in clockwise or counter clockwise you can change how far or tight the bolt closes. if anyone knows what the correct setting is for safe operation please any info helps thanks.

If you're talking about rotating the bolt head on the bolt body...turn it in as tight as it goes, till it stops. That's where it goes.

thanks thats where i had it set, but when i bought that is not how it was set. when purchased if it were loaded the bolt would only close half way, this could have been dangerous if i had decided to shoot it. I suspect the bolt could have blown open on me.

It was wrong before then. All the recoil stress would have been directed into the threads of the bolt head to bolt...but if the bolt wouldn't close it wouldn't have fired anyway.

Bolthead

YOU DON'T CHANGE "HOW TIGHT" THE BOLT CLOSES BY SCREWING OR UNSCREWING IT!
It has to be screwed all the way in.
This configuration allows the bolt not to rotate on the base of the cartridge when the handle is raised but that's all.
When in need to alter or fix headspace, different bolthead lengths are available and numbered from #0 to #4; you just screw the replacement bolthead in.

Although #4 bolt heads may have existed, as did 00 bolt heads, they were not listed in the manuals. Most new rifles were issued with a 0 or 1 bolt head. These days lots of guys are looking for 2s and especially 3s to account for wear. #4 boltheads would be a godsend, but I doubt we will find any bins full of them.

Cno7s were an exception.....bolt heads ran right to #5. Surprising too, since the wear on a 22 version was negligible.

It sounds like you're a little new with Enfields. :)

Perhaps download a complete set of manuals for the Lee Enfield, which includes operating and armourer's maintenance instructions.

The manuals may be found in the Technical Articles for Milsurp Collectors and Re-loaders (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=25

2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=3314

Complete Set includes:

- 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Data Summary
- 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Parts Identification List
- 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
- 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Equipment Description
- 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=3322

Complete Set includes:

- 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
- 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

Note: The difference between the 1991 set of No.4 Manuals and 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals, is that the 1991 manual contains armourer's information on how to properly "bed" the No.4 rifle, whereas the newer 2002 manual does not.

Hope this helps... :)
