Hi guys

I got permission from my GF to set up a small BB/Pellet/airsoft range in our appartement.

Setting up the targets is fine but i'm worried about the noise.

Anyone got an idea how i could deal with that ?

Thx.

Ear plugs are usually the best way to deal with the noise... oh wait... you must be meaning you don't want other people to hear it. In that case... crank the stereo up while you're shooting

A friend had a range set up in his apartment, I don’t think noise was ever an issue for him - his concern was setting things us so that he wasn’t visible to neighbours when shooting.

My suggestion is to set it up and see what happens - and if you’re really worried, have a Brad nailer handy to show if anyone asks about the noise.

I believe the key thing involved is that no one finds out you are shooting, period.

As stupid as it may seem I am pretty sure it will be illegal to discharge a firearm (BB gun and air rifle qualify regardless of velocity) in your building. I believe Air Soft is no problem.

Somebody prove me wrong please.

I own many apartments. I have had people shooting airguns at my property and they did property damage. The far bigger concern for me and for any landlord is how comfortable the other tenants are with this activity. You are renting only one unit if I lose other tenants over your passion for airgun target shooting then you will find that you will be doing your target shooting in a snow bank and not in one of my units. Even though I am a firearms enthusiast I am far more interested in supporting my family then supporting your air gun marksmanship hobby.

I knew someone who used to shoot his airgun in his apartment using an improvised silencer, but then he later found out that it was illegal.

Most municipalities have gun discharge by laws. These by laws are specifically designed to include air guns. Check with local airsoft field in your municipality if they need a permit you better have one less SWAT take you down.

Im guessing if anyone in the apartment building gets a sniff or hear a gun going off there may be a swift knock on your door, if they even knock it when entering, this is something you do not want to mess around with, find a local club or a location out of town and set up,

For some reason this post made me think of the question...If a pellet or BB gun is 350fps, is it illegal? I realize the twang of the spring would be louder than the muzzle report, just curious.

I believe all air rifles are a firearm under Federal law... those over 495 fps require a PAL.

Okay. That makes sense. That being said, and I can't believe I'm comparing us to England, they have better rules with regard to air rifles than we do.

If used illegally, I believe this is the case.

To the question (assuming it's safe, legal, and you have your landlord's permission) the two main considerations for airgun noise are;

1. The sound of the gun itself
2. The sound of the projectile making contact

CO2, and pneumatic guns are the loudest...and should probably be ruled-out if noise is the main concern. At the other end of the spectrum, spring piston guns. These can be as toy-like as a Daisy Buck BB gun, all the way up to PAL rated magnums. The more power=the more report. A human sneeze is probably 3X louder than a Daisy Buck. lol As for targets/impact sound...start thinking "Cardboard box filled with old, folded towels/rags" and go from there. The more power/the more filling required so the projectiles don't go through. Not going to describe this in detail, but use your imagination. Not complicated, and it works.

Airsoft is another option, the non-battery-powered/spring guns can be quiet/fun. At the ranges you're probably using them indoors...not a ton of difference probably. Certainly, if you're comparing to a spring BB gun.

At the end of the day, there is risk...it is a bit messy, and you need to be doubly-aware of your backstop. Not a great idea overall, maybe less so when you rule-out allot of the "cooler" cheap/fun airguns in the interest of keeping quiet.

What landlord would agree to this?
This would void his insurance, open him up to legal action by the strata and city/police, and potentially damage his property.
That would be a no from me dawg.
