sharing the meat

How do I quote an entry these days?

So in ON a 'camp' can hunt with all the tags in the group? If 6 guys with 6 tags total, one person could legally harvest all six animals?

FWIW anyone I hunt with the understanding is the meat is shared.

How does a newb, like myself, get into a hunting party? I know that sounds ridiculous, but I don't know any hunters.
Hunting party or hunt camp?

You'd have to start by trying to meet hunters in the first place. Some people may be willing to let a random person join their group but that isn't the norm by any stretch.

For a hunting party, which generally involves a group of guys that tent it/trailer it/motel it to hunt crown or book through outfitters your odds may be better at getting an invite if they have room for an extra.

Hunt camps on the other hand are generally something one buys a share in and can be a bit more complicated depending on the crowd. Some aren't opposed to bringing guests but generally it's people that are better known to the members.

Anyways back to Jimbobob08. I assume you are in Ontario or some other jurisdiction where party hunting is allowed?

During many years of deer hunting in Ontario, it has been exceedingly rare that everybody in the deer camp shoots a deer, or that everybody even sees a deer. Sometimes, one hunter shoots more than one deer, generally because of dumb luck, ie right time and right place. What has always seemed fair to me, and which I wrote almost 20 years ago!!! is that everybody present on the day a deer is shot shares equally in the meat from that deer. We discuss all this before the hunt starts so there is no question about sharing the meat. I did have an experience some years ago with a guy whose son shot two deer in two days and the guy said both deer were theirs exclusively, despite the agreement. I never hunted with that greedy me-firster again, and would not do so.

But never mind what I think, what do YOU want to do? If it pisses you off that some guys in camp get meat without doing their fair share of hunting/chores/etc, then maybe you should move on. For me, I would not............

Thanks for the reply Doug.

Yes, I’m in Ontario where party hunting is allowed. I was never mad, was just a thought that may be “more fair” in some situations, without excluding anyone.

In hindsight, and after a friend reminded me tonight, the hunt isn’t everything, and some of these guys would be sorely missed if they didn’t come.

Likely stick with the equal share in the future.

don't know if i replied to this necro thread but in our hunting circles we only meat split when it comes to moose and elk.
No party hunting here so everyone's deer tags are thiers to fill. I have a couple very productive deer hunting spots I've shared with a tight circle of friends and family. Places where if they put thier time in, they will get one. So splitting meat on deer hunts almost never happens although I have done so on a few hunts because i felt the other hunter certainly put thier time in with me and worked as hard as me to get the animal but it fell to my rifle. But there are no set rules for meat sharing when it comes to deer. Elk and moose we generally all pitch in for any costs incurred and split the meat between our families.

Got it, and many thanks! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

Well we don’t hunt in camps or big groups, I hunt with one or two other people/family, if we shoot something, usually moose in our case, we field dress together, we butcher together and we split in equal parts unless one says he doesn’t want more than a certain amount!
Always worked good !

Well if you can think of a better way, I'd love to know!

It is very true tough.
Taking someone new hunting is a big deal. You are showing locations, methods, strategies and potentially sharing a space with ammunition flying. That involves some trust, which comes from engaging with each other. Maybe you've a local forum or maybe finding a local here? I've found the more you speak of hunting/shooting someone pops in and enjoys those topics. Never know where a chance meeting and conversations will take you.

Over the years I've been invited on many great hunts,, with great people that I've met in various ways. I've learned to hunt geese in a field, deer from a tree, turkey from a moving truck (kidding), spent a few days at a 100+ year old deer camp, and left in a layout boat, floating in the inner bay of Lake Erie, while rafts of ducks piled in around me, till well after the sun went down waiting on the tender boat to be refueled.
There's been some amazing times.
Meeting and getting to know hunters can open doors and create great friendships. Try not to meet hunters while trespassing on their land though....

I don't hunt in a camp or groups, only my son and I hunt together. I always give the entire animal away to my adult children. This year, so far, I gave this mule deer buck to my daughter and her family.

Yes. I’m not sure of the maximum number of hunters, but I believe it was 8 at one time. You must be hunting within 5kms of another and have radio or cell communication to call off the hunt if tags are filled.

Some will apply for tags and not hunt at all with the intention of someone else filling the tag for them. Illegal, but people do it.

During the shotgun hunt I have shot quite a few doubles and even a handful of triples over the years. I’m “that guy” in the group who usually fills other people’s tags for them, which does make for some arguments as some people feel ripped off for not shooting their own deer.
