I have always been interested in sharps rifles. Can anyone tell me what the best bang for the buck is? I love the Shilos but they seem to be out of my price range. I saw one at a local shop that was marked Stoeger arms, but at 1800 bucks it seemed pretty steep. Anyone have any ideas?

If you're going to go that route, I'd suggest ordering one from Shiloh. The workmanship is excellent and you can pick the configuration you want to the smallest detail.
The only down-side is the wait (mine took about two years) and the trouble you have to go through to import it. But... considering the finished product, the wait and hassle is definitely worth it.
Plan B is: wait 'till one comes up on the EE (or at your local shop). I've seen a couple of Shilohs in the last couple of years that were "as good as new" but put up for sale because their owner changed interests. Price was good, too (i.e. mid-$2,000's)

You could also check out the Pedersoli models. With proper loading and a decent set of sights they will shoot very well indeed. Some are being used at BPCR shoots and hold their own against the higher priced models of 1874s.

Bite the bullet (so to speak ...) and look for a Sharps. I own five Shiloh rifles and was lucky enough to get all of them from previous owners. I went so far as to trade a C. Sharps '75 rifle for one. Nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't a Shiloh.
At the risk of sounding like a Shiloh Snob (check their web site to find out what I mean ...), you get more than fair value, basically a semi-custom rifle that while not cheap, is relatively affordable. Load it up and get the rifle of your dreams, but be prepared to wait for it ....
You are also never going to have difficulty selling one off whereas you will take a pounding on a Ped or other product. That isn't to say that they don't shoot, they simply don't have the cachet or class associated with the Shiloh name. They back that up with service.
Try and get parts and service for an Italian gun.

The one for 1800 definatly was not a shiloh. It was just marked Stoeger. The craftsmanship certainly did not represent the price tag.
What I am looking for is more of a versitile rifle than for strictly BPCR. I would like it to have a little shorter barrel to lighten it up a bit for hunting. Sounds like I should just save my nickels and dimes for longer and wait for a good shiloh. There is a nice saddle rifle on the EE right now...wish I wasnt tapped out!!

As far as value for money, the Pedersoli line is great. Good metal to wood fit, and as accurate as any Shilo. In BPCR the cartridge loading is the key to accuracy....none of them will shoot BP loads unless the cartridges are loaded properly.
But.....shop around......there is a big price spread amongst Canadian Pedersoli dealers.....check Doc Rowland's prices in New Brunswick..

Wouldn't mind a carbine in 50-70 either.

My #1 Sporter was 2700$ by the time I got it up here. It now has a set of Ron Heilman long range sights on it. It is basically a CUSTOM BUILT RIFLE. They build every thing, including the bbls. And most everything is done by hand. Fit and finish is second to none! This rifle will never leave my family.

For utility and value, the Peds are fine, and most (if not all) shoot as well as the shooter's skill level and ammo quality allow.
I've only seen a few original Sharps (and Colts) and many of the modern replicas have fewer tool marks and closer tolerances. Stands to reason, due to better production methods, equipment and quality control.

Anyway here are my Shiloh's and some knives I made last year.
The top rifle is a 40-90 and the bottom rifle is my new 45-110.
It has presentation grade walnut, the works.
You can buy a standard Shiloh for under $2000 and it will shoot every bit as well as those fancy ones that I own.
My Shilo Sharps #3 Sporting Rifle in .45-70 with my 1906 mfg Winchester M92 in .44 Magnum.
