Several years ago I acquired a Sharps in I believe a Model 1869 - what it says on the barrel. I am looking for someone who can tell me what I got. I am told a Sharps letter for this serial number is not available. I bought this Sharps from a man who has no idea where he bought it or who he bought it from, only that he bought it many years ago so he could not tell me much.
From the info on the web, the Model 1869 was made between 1869 and 1872 with about 200 (?) being made. The serial numbers on the receiver and barrel match and the serial number matches the time frame that the Model 1869 was produced. It is in 50 Cal, perfect bore. I suspect that the gun may have been reconditioned at some time but if it was, that was a long time ago. I have taken the forearm off and I believe the wood looks old.
I believe the finish is called lightning blue, Sharps used it in some special order custom sporting rifles. I am fairly certain the engraving is original - I have photos of other original Sharps with similar engraving. I believe the metal is original condition, not sure about the wood - no evidence of refinishing.
Other than that I do not know much about this Sharps and certainly no idea on the value. A "factory letter" is not available for this serial number. I am looking for books on original Sharps. I did post this on a US forum looking for info and had several enquiries wanting to purchase. Any info on what I have would be very much appreciated. Thank You
