Shattered screw on Chiappa mare's leg

So I took my Mare's leg out to shoot for the first time, sometime during the 14 shots I fired the screw that goes through the metal ring on the front part of the grip literally shattered into 3 pieces. The head of the screw is gone, the smooth non threaded portion was still in there and so where the threads, but they weren't connected. I had to cut a slot into the small threaded so I could use a flathead to remove it. It should be covered by warranty, but with covid-19 out there I have a feeling that might not happen for a bit.
However this seems like it might be a easy type of screw to find, as I have one that is so close other than not being the correct threads.

Anyone with one of these able to tell me what type of screw this is called and what the thread pitch is? I can probably get one from one of the industrial shops or electrical supply, maybe even home depot.

Foreend barrel band screw should get you close.... :)

Not the best time to call Italy, but in a normal world I would contact Chiappa and see if then can slip one in an envelope for you..... try the Canadian distributor but it might be easier to deal with an American distributor?

You're the second person on CGN with. "screw" problem on a Chiappa Mare's Leg. The other fellow had the barrel band screw break, too. I don't have a mare's leg, but a 12" Alaskan TD in .357 which doesn't have the barrel band, but a screw on either side of the end cap which go into a dovetailed block under the barrel. Seems to me the screws are rather soft steel. Whatever yours is, it's almost certainly metric and may not be easy to find. On the other thread someone suggested thet North Sylva is the Cdn. distributor but I'm not sure as their website is only accessible by dealers. You might contact Wanstalls, as they'd know. Taylor Firearms in the US is the NA distributor I think but I doubt they'd ship even a screw up here because of idiot ITAR restrictions. Wanstall's is probably your best bet.

I like my Alaskan TD but I do feel that it's a bit flimsy in some areas of construction, esp. the screws, which IMHO could in some cases be larger diameter and harder steel. I'm not familiar with your rifle; dlooks like the screw goes straight through and thread into the other side of the barrel band. The OP in the other thread stated that "it has a shoulder to bottom on the barrel band for proper tension. But the threads are wrecked in the band,..." which would make it an unusual profile and highly unlikely that any industrial parts supply house would have a match, even if your threads are OK.

Ahhh.... I see that Can-Down has chipped in. An e-mail to Chiappa in Italy might indeeed be the best solution.

Thanks. Yeah I already did the online parts email thing. I figure I'm in for a bit of a wait. I might try giving north sylva a call and see what they can do, maybe ask Canadian tire (where I bought it).
With the thread pitch of the screw I can at least find something that will thread in, I can use a hollow .032" piece of plastic or metal (the diameter of the thicker part of the screw) over as much as I need, should work as a temporary fix. Worse case ill find a bolt that is small enough to slip by the threads and just pop a rounded nut on the end.

Going by memory I seem to recall that the Chiappa version of the 1892 adheres closely to the original Winchester design and Just might use the same fasteners both in diameter and thread pitch.
Dig a bit deeper and you may just find that a Win 1892 band screw may work.

That said,I know for certain that the Rossi version uses metric fasteners as well as eliminating all leaf springs in favour of coil.

I suspect that the only people who would know the thread pitch and dia. will be the manufacturer or maybe the distributor, unless someone here has a metric pitch gauge. On the other thread, "hunterhenderson" says he has 5 Chiappa rifles, so maybe a PM to him would be in order. CT?? Highly unlikely! (But you never know...) North Sylva's website & FB pages seem to be completely locked down unless you are a reseller. I don't see any reference to them here on CGN so you might be SOL unless someone here knows how to contact them or has access to a commercial business directory. But the info is out there somewhere :)

It's a pretty small screw and easy to over torque.

Years ago I bought a Ranchhand in person, brand new in the shop at Wanstalls... just before I paid I noticed that I could turn the head of the foreend barrel band screw with my fingernail. It was obviously broken and I showed it to Gary at the time..... he said there was nothing they could do about it and as it was the only one they had and a bit rare at the time I thought to my self.... how hard could it be to get a new screw for a brand new gun..... even without Wanstalls help.

It took over a year dealing with Snaperheads the Rossi reps in Canada.

Ugh. I've heard that parts are impossible to get from Rossi, even for distributors. Don't know about Chiappa.

I have a feeling it will be a while before I get my hands on a manufacturer replacement. But I did manage to find a stainless screw with the correct thread pitch that was long enough...it'll do for now until I can get something ordered.

Turns out its a #5-44 machine screw, or well that's the closest fit anyways. Having a hard time finding one to order though. The screw I found came out of one of my screw buckets, its a cheaply made #5 as its 0.010" smaller in diameter as it measures 0.120" on my caliper, the original measures 0.131", a #5 is 0.125 or 1/8".

Damn... if I could get across the border to my go-to hardware store (Hardware Sales in Bellingham) I could get one for you as they have a whole metal tray of "gun" screws! 5-44 (or 5-40) I think is the size for S&W revolver grips.

The original might be a M3.5-06, which is about the same as 6-40, according to this reference.

Acklands Grainger, M3.5-0.6x35mm machine screw. Thank you.!

:) Hopefully you don't have to break the bank for a few screws as A-G isn't known for good pricing. But you could recoup by selling a few to other Chiappa owners, not to mention the distrubuors and retail stores :)

I do have to buy 100 it seems, its $7.05 for the screws and I can pick them up in town here.

Nothing wrong with that price :) Most industrial suppliers only sell in full boxes anyway. I sometimes buy a box of whatever from the local Lordco as it's often cheaper than buying from RONA, if they even have what I need.
