Today was a great day, not to cold +3, figured the all critters would be out and about and the coyotes should be taking advantage of this so I thought I would go out this afternoon if the chance permitted itself.....It did, I didn't have much time but figured I could get in 2 stands in before dark....I got to the farm house about 4:25, got my gear and started walking to my first stand....I am hunting a small creek/river bottom with fields on both sides...The bush is not to wide 100-200yds but is really long.....I wanted to set up in a corner of the bush looking into a field that has a 20 acre bush 200 yds to the north, but as I get into the field to set up my caller there go 6-7 deer 200 yds and running fast...They must of been on the edge of that 20 acre bush and seen me....I figure this stand was going to be a bust so I just let the caller play for about 15 mins before getting up and turning it off.....I wanted to get to the second stand 600-700 yds east from me... the wind is coming out of the south west and I am on the north side of the bush walking east....good wind for me...When I reach my calling area I decide I am going to call from inside the bush....This area of the bush is the widest at 200 yds....It has some taller grass and natural opening to get to the south side fields....I walk in and set up the caller about 40 yds south and slightly west of me.....The wind is still blowing from the south west....I know have the wind blowing roughly 45 degree angle from right to left of me and into the open field behind me....The caller and decoy didn't play for a minute before I see some moverment in front of me from in the taller grass, its a coyote coming in from the south, flip off my safety and get ready he is about 80 yds out.....I know I must shoot him befor he hits the little drainage ditch 25 yds ahead of me or I will loose site of him....He is moving fairly quickly and turning to go downwind....My caller pauses....he stops about 60 yds away but behind to much trees/braches in the way....A few seconds later my caller begins again and he runs right to my caller/decoy and I yell roof roof he runs right by my shooting window which was about 20 yds wide and ends up in the drainage ditch in front of me....He is there but I can't see him.....20 seconds later he is out and running away from my call and to my left and I yell roof roof he stops but to much debris in the way....he continues to trot away and I keep yelling roof roof well just before he went over a little ridge he stopped to have one more look and I tried to thread the needle on him and shot....He vanished and I figured I probably missed him because I did not hear any screaming or growling ....I let the caller continue to play for a few more minutes....I figured I better get my stuff and get out before it got to late...I walk over to my caller/decoy and look for his tracks....He ended up less than 10' from my call before he turned and began leaving.....As luck would have it, if he wasn't so fast coming in he would of been toast, instead all I found was some fur, followed his tracks for about 150yds, no blood so he lives.....I was even surprised that the bullet made it that far without it hitting something first...It was a 100yd shot through the bush.....that’s my story and I am sticking to it....
