Shed Hunting

joe m, them are some fine looking racks you have. I can only hope to have that much luck.
I plan to get out this weekend, i have a couple farms that the owners have seen some healthy deer recently. Thanks all for letting us see your collection. Keep posting when you find them.

Mulies are still geared up in my area. Have a real nice pair of bucks hanging around. They look like brothers as they have the same drop tine.

We found our first cast antler of the year, a nice 4 point that my dad came across in the woods. It's always nice when you find them after putting in the miles, it reassures you that you know what you're looking for. My dad managed to see the base of the antler sticking out of the snow from across a creek. This 4-point is a pretty good size for our neck of the woods, and I can't wait to see him this fall!

A few years ago I found a nice set of Mule Antlers along a fence adjacent to a highway. Looked like they both dropped off after he cleared the fence.

I found four sheds this year so far, 3 whitetail and 1 mulie. that's the earliest I've ever seen them, all in the same area, and a couple days apart in mid February.
Most years i don't see any until late April. The long cold winter takes it toll on these animals, and their biological clock is off. I see tufts of deer hair in a lot of places, not a good sign. Last week I seen a pair of large Mule deer, still wearing their head gear.. As a rule, I don't see sheds until late April, early May in our area in Southern Alberta, this year was different.

Spent 5 hours looking for antlers yesterday. had a great time locating trails feeding areas and bedding areas but no sheds. Still some snow on the north faces of the hills at my buddy's farm.
Did see some strange split hoof tracks and some big cat tracks as well. Will have another look on Wednesday afternoon.

And yet another afternoon and still no antlers. But what a nice walk around the farm, with my buddy's dog by my side. Had enough time to play with a couple 22's as well.
Great to be outside.

You CGN'rs out there in Saskatchewan seem to have it easy. It is my first year looking for them and I suspect that when I find the first one I will likely find more.
Tim H your pictures are not available either.

a set myself and co-worker found while hunting rabbits back in the mid 90,s.found both sides about 10 yards apart, blood was still wet on the ends.right side scores 71 6/8 inches, the left side scores 73 3/8 inches.also had another w/t shed which scored in the high 80's until some a-hole stole it.have found around 30-35 sheds over the years most are only 3-4 points.

Last week I went for a treasure-hunt walk with my 5 year old grandson and my 10 week old Lab-cross pup ....but there was still too much snow in the bush ...grandpa kept falling through the crust into knee-deep snow (on a snow-machine trail)...while the two pups stayed on top .
On the way back from our little excursion puffed-out grampa suggested a little rest under the spreading bows of a large spruce in an area that had no snow . The pup (the 4-legged one) immediately started to snuffle his way through the blown in piles of leaves and to my grandson's astonishment came up with a 4-point antler (which my grandson confiscated...it's at home in his room now).
Soon as the snow get more manageable we three will be going back, maybe that lab puppy can find the antlers off that big buck we caught on the trail camera .

That Lab sounds like a natural, a little training and he will be good to go.

I have been training my Lab to find sheds but most of the time he is just running around acting like an idiot. He does find some when he slows down and starts actually using his nose.

I would bet a really good dog would find 10 times more sheds than I can find.
