By not harvesting sheep the pop will grow that's a fact. If we are at capacity then it will have a down side on horn growth over the long run without opening up new ranges.

You're absolutely right, it is happening right now in WMU400. There's been talk of having a ewe hunt in that zone.

I think they want to increase the population, but more so they want to increase the number of mature rams.

Personally I think it would be a great idea to have an "any ram" draw to go along with the general full curl season. That way residents would get an opportunity at the rams that wouldn't make full curl.

Totally agree with this. there are some big, old broomed off rams out there that will die of old age.

this story is a little longer than your presence here. not only about sheep hunting but sometimes attitude is not helping. to sum up.

objective and TJ S. is certainly not something i will put together in the same sentence there are more opposite.

I agree. Draws for under full is a good idea. However nothing of the sort is on the table. It's full curl or nothing. Only thing I don't like about the draw any size idea is that non sheep hunters that are just out there for "a" sheep will kill a class 2 ram. That bugs me.

If we are under the 5% in some zones, why are we sending world class Rams over the boarder to help pops state side when we r in need of the same thing? Don't tell me either they paid some much for those Rams to make it worth it either. And if so show where that money was spent on our sheep?

You should read up on the why and where those sheep are going. it's not like they are capturing big Cadomin Rams to take south so the can be harvested. They have gone to places where populations have been decimated or extirpated in order to bring back a viable population in those areas. Certainly a noble cause. They also come from the Cadomin minesite where we have a surplus of sheep. It's a little different than moving big Rams from the mine to other areas of our province. The state where they are going pays for the cost of the capture etc. There is no huge transfer of funds for those sheep. They are a gift in the interest of expanding the range of wild sheep in North America.
 
That's fine im all for expanding sheep in North America. However the states need to figure it out down there with the amount ignorant land owners running domestic sheep on bighorn ranges and in turn wiping out herds. I say let's be a little selfish here and concentrate on our own problems first.

As for you guido. I'm not TJ. If that's what your implying... Or do u just not like another opinion? That's what forums are about, no? Bouncing opinions back and for the greater good.

The Sheephunter issue is bigger than just this thread. He knows why, ask him...

Same with wolves, virtually all the wolves the Americans are now complaining about, originated from transplants taken in Alberta. Question is, what are we getting in return ?

Nothing in return is or should be required but they have given us swift foxes for release up here. The transplants are for the greater good of wildlife. We have an excess population on the minesite that cannot be hunted. Why not use them for transplants elsewhere? The notion that we should haul Rams off Cadomin and dump them elsewhere in the province where we have an open season would serve what purpose?
 
I'm sure there are many Americans that would like us to take those Wolves back... They are doing a real number of the Yellowstone elk heards.

Thinking about it last night. I don't think a draw for any size bighorn is a good idea. It's just to easy to take away our general season with a draw already in place further down the road.
 
I like the idea of being able to buy a tag and hunt.

full curl allows that and still accomplishes the goals of managing for more mature rams and improved herd structure.

Draws won't benefit anyone other than the folks who want very exclusive hunting opportunities, and the outfitters.

there's a few zones that are draw only. I get your concern though, I'm just wondering if it would actually make it easier for them to put it on a draw?

I doubt we'll see it anyways.

You can go sheep hunting every year, by following what I do when not drawn for a tag............... I go hunting with a camera. I don't hunt sheep (not very smart animal) however I get out and capture others on film. Another option is tag along with someone who has a tag, or venture to BC and hook-up with a resident who can take you out.
Maybe you can just sit it out until drawn, just like with other animals that require higher priority points. Another option is, if your not drawn for sheep in Alberta, you can also hunt elk, moose, mule deer, antelope, black bear, whitetail deer, cougar, mountain goat, coyotes, wolf, wild buffalo, migratory birds, upland birds.........................
