Sheep Rifle

I’ve seen 4 bighorns killed with a 308 and 165 Hornady sst’s hahahha

Yea. Have had .308 armed mountain clients and it bloody well works, one fellow in August took his just shy of 400 yard mountain goat cleanly with his .308. It works, .300 is better, but it weighs more, kicks more. I’d hunt with a 5 1/4lb .308 Kimber over my 8lb 7mm Mag anyday. The Mag helps and opens doors not open to the standard cartridges in the mountains, but only in 10% of situations and it’s much more miserable to carry for the other 90%.

very happy for the outcome of your hunt in Asia and your story.

seems your rifle/combo/scope worked great for your need.

we had a family friend that outfitted hunts in asia (mostly) and his favourite caliber was the 300 wea mag. seems Doug nailed it too.

love these discussions .... Shoot what you know how to shoot well. Sheep arn't that hard to kill with a well placed quality bullet. I"ve seen high country mulies harder to knock down then a mountain monarch ram.

Too good of a post to be buried in 11 pages of rifle calibers! You should start a thread specific to this adventure. Must have been pretty amazing meeting all those folks and getting to see that part of the world!

August 2018- Dagestan Tur hunt- Azerbaijan.

This hunt made any other hunt I have been a part of (including shooting a charging Buffalo at 10 yards and Kyrgyzstan and the Rockies) seem like child's play. So bloody dangerous. Death lurking beneath you at all times. The mountains in Azerbaijan are considered the most treacherous and steep hunting in the world. Before going I spoke to many very very experienced international mountain hunters and everyone told me that the Sheki area was incredible but absolutely terrifying. They undersold it- it took every bit of courage and stupidity I had in my body to climb that mountain each morning......in the dark with no headlamps- which was actually better because you didn't really know how much danger you were in at all times. I was lucky to kill a 10 year old 34 inch Ram with a single shot from my Christensen 26 Nosler across a big canyon while he was walking away at 500-ish yards. There is a fantastic story to go along with this one too and it was a great hunt.

Would echo this sentiment 10 fold. You can kill a sheep pretty easily if you hit it right. Hit a Muley (or goat) right and the thing keeps going...

Practice, practice, practice. I used to hunt with a guy that shot a 243 WSSM; killed a few sheep.

Another good little hunt report but you are keepin it in the shadows on what could be a fairly interesting and great thread of its own.
