Sheep tent

I think this thread has basically covered most of the better options available in the market. It is a balance between better built and usually cheaper tents (like Marmot Limelight 3 and North Face Rock 32...) on one side, and less durable (IMO) and more expensive but lighter and practical ones like Mutha Hubba on the other side. Make your call. I have noticed that new version of Mutha Hubba (the green one) has gained about a pound over the old yellow ones! perhaps making them very light and keeping the price down doesn't work.

On a different note, those who are fixated on the WEIGHT issue only (and that include yours truly) may want to look at Big Agnes and their Seedhouse 3 (full mesh) and Creek Fly 3 (half Mesh) models. Both are about three pounds lighter than Mutha and about $150-$200 more expensive than Mutha. They are not known for being the easiest to set up. Still, in long distance hiking, 3 pounds less weight is not something you pass.

I will also be looking at a tent for backpack hunting, not sheep hunting but definitly in the mountains non the less. Does anyone have experience with tunnel tents? i know that they are not free standing so i have no idea what the set up would be like with these. These seem like they have an excellent size to weight ratio and some also have massive vestibules that really appeal to me except for the fact that they are damn spendy.

Hillberg can be your answer but as you said the cost ...!!!!

I think i have spent about an hour on Hillebergs website today! They are definetly spendy but it would probably see more use than my wall tent and i prefer to buy once and buy right.

One additional thing that i have to consider is that my wife will often be with me and HATES feeling claustraphobic.I noticed that some of Hille's tents have 42" of headspace which would be our absolute minimum. I wont be buying one this year but i can hope for next spring and push off buying a new rifle for a couple of years.

as you ill buy another one next spring.

last has been stolen ...

For the last few years I have gone most often without a tent.

A decent sleeping bag and siltarp will keep me warm and reasonably dry.

A tent I would take for the bugs only but where I hunt in Alberta those tend to be gone most years early September in the mountains.

I try to save weight, sheep hunting you carry enough anyway, optics, gun and all.

X2-A decent sleeping bag and siltarp !!

also try a gortex bag cover they work great!

Chaostraitor and altaberg,

your option can be good when you know what you re doing otherwise it can be the worst especially it the weather it not on your side ...

and i ve done your side when i was in the army ...

My first tent was a SD Clip Flashlight, and just this season I've switched to a Hilleberg Akto. Would recommend either, all depends on the assorted features/designs/styles you are looking for in a tent.

Tarptent

Give tarptent consideration.

I have a rainbow - well built, around 2 lbs and the nice thing if you have an issue its not some offshore company - you phone Henry Shires. He builds and handles everything out of his garage in the US. Good man to deal with.
