Sherman Tank

Hi.

That got your attention.

A group of us in western Canada want to put a Sherman tank together. We have a turret, two engines ( one running ) and lots of interior parts. What we need is a hull, gun and mantlet so if any of you guys ( or girls ) know of anything buried or better yet not burried, I would appreciate knowing. Free ride when were finished the tank for any leads that pan out and for any trully great leads we will let you drive the tank.

What kind of Sheman Turret do you have?

I am guessing it is a 76.2 mm barreled turret? There are not many 75mm here in Canada post war.

In all honesty, most of these that were in Canadian service can be seen today on the ranges of Canadian training centers. There was a small amount exported to a third party that sent them to Isreal.

Anyways, you need to make sure that you have the right hull beacue the later model shermans that we used post war had two engines in them and the war time ones only had one.

There are a couple of vehicle collector groups out there that could help. In my area, Prarrie Command is the best. Also you can try the Royal Canadian Artillery Museum since they have a fantastic vehicle collection with many of the volunteers having excellent contacts for parts and other scroungeable items.

try some of the oilfield vehicle supply companies (foremost?) i have seen a few sherman/priest hulls used as equipment haulers and coring platforms...there was a place in calgary on 50th or 53rd SW ave doing restoration for a while and right around th corner from them on 3rd st? that specailized in tracked vehicle conversion for the oilpatch...
 
I had the gun and mantlet.....PM me for information as to it's present whereabouts.

I have a breech block for it still.

About the only source for a decent hull that I know of is Cold lake, through their range control. There were various groupls that managed to scrounge armour out of there in the past. But you will have to find another hull to replace it as they have to have something to blow up. The FV432s were failrly comon on the prairies...usually the guys would just substitue with one of those.

There is nothing worth salvaging off the Shilo ranges anymore. There was one Sherman which still had potential when I got here 11 years ago, but it has since been turned in to swiss cheese.

I've seen two Sherman chassis in Valemount, BC. They've had what appears to be logging or drilling equipment added on. I'm not sure what's left of the hulls.

IIRC, they were the later HVSS suspension versions.
 
Many, many grapple yarders, towers and rock drills on the west coast were mounted on Sherman undercarriage. Usually the front glacis, differential and trans, and of course, the tracks. There used to be a company on Vancouver Island that supplied Sherman undercarriage parts to logging contractors. Can't remember the name though. Fat lot of help I am.

As strange as it sounds, try finding small municipalities with display shermans. War memorials aren't in nearly as much vogue after 13 years of Liberal rule, and some of them might be anxious to replace their rusty shermans with park benches and the like.
 
Israel have converted many Sherman tanks for other military uses, as well as many third world contries like Pakistan and others have recently, or are currently using the Sherman tanks ?

Worth looking into these and other countries that have used the Sherman tanks, and find out about their eventual surplus sales ?

The Sherman tanks that have been "civilized" and used for logging and drilling in Canada only have the bottom half left. Doubtful if any top half of these Sherman tanks have survived the smelter ?

You are probably thinking of Madill, just north of Nanaimo on the Island hiway.
 
There were at least two in toronto, one outside the downsview armoury & one on display on lakeshore with the lancaster. Try contacting the toronto warplane museum, they got the lanc, maybe they know what happened to the sherman. The one ouside the armoury looked so good you could almost hear it running.
