The contest was: To see how far you could get the bullet to stick out of the muzzle without falling out on the ground. These were all jacketed bullets, and there were tons of stuck ones, lots of laughing went on as be drove them out and carried on with the next test load. No one ever died during this and no rifles were damaged.

That is all well and good as long as you make sure the bore is clear before firing the next shot. Not everyone is intelligent enough to figure that out.

^^^ As I said, that was the game. Of course we checked the barrel each time. ANYTIME I feel a load has fired "differently", I always check the bore. I do this without any thought. Too bad not everyone does.

7.62x39mm and .303Br. 4.5gn Unique with a 220gn Sierra ProHunter. Couldn't hear it indoors, sounded like a .22Lr. 14gn Unique with a 180gn Hornady, fit the bill for the .303Br.

My fav light load for these two is 7 grains of #2400 under a .311 cast round ball that is 50 to 55 grains, the ball is seated a little more than half way in the case mouth. It looks like an ice cream cone, sounds and feels like a .22lr.

Blacksmith: Are you getting consistent ignition, and velocity? Lots of unburnt powder?..Ben

Ben, I only loaded up 12 of them just to see what would happen. I put 3 (IIRC) through Redhouse's chroney, and they were all consistant. The rest "sounded" consistant. I say that because of the tremendous delay between firing, and them hitting (and bouncing off) the wood of the target backers. They all seemed the same to me. No noticable unburnt powder. No misfires.

I was firing them out of my Ruger Redhawk with a 5.5" barrel. What I was hoping to see was a very slow bullet, and a giant fireball from the slow burning powder as the unburnt stuff exited the barrel. Slow bullet, yes, but no noticable fireball. I'd like to fire one after dark sometime to see if it really is there and I just couldn't see it in the daylight.

Edit: Hummm. Now you've got me thinking about the consistancy thing. They were ALL at 495fps. Anybody know if that is possibly the slowest speed a Chroney will register, and maybe they were actually going slower than that ? I didn't even measure the powder. Just filled the cases by eye and popped in a bullet. Hummm. Might have to try this experiment again real soon.

have put a arrow over the top at 200 fps

you can take your chrony out side in the day light and pass your hand over the top (fast) and either get a reading or a error message

My chrony will read the pellets speed coming out of my son's ancient daisy rifle. 195fps. It should read down to almost zero.

I spent today playing with a 45 colt chambered martini rifle and with a 250 grain bullet and 3 grains of trailboss it's pretty awesome. 2 grains is really quiet but penetration really suffered.
