Hey folks,

I recently had the opportunity to shoot a 1874 sharps made by Uberti, in 45-70 and ever since that day about a month ago, I've been researching which 1874 is gonna make it's way into my safe. It was the most fun I've had with a rifle in years and I've decided I have to have my own.
I'm a believer in buying quality the first time, and from my research, a Shiloh Sharps is about as good as it gets. Is it a possibility to get one north of the border? Or am I dreaming about something out of my reach?

If they can't be had, what else would you recommend? I've read that Pedersoli is the best as far as Italian replicas go. Any truth to that?

I also saw the '74 in the EE with "G. MC MILLAN & Co." stamped on the reciever.
It looks like a fine rifle, and one that I would be interested in, but cant find any information about the manufacturer. Anyone here have any information?

Thanks for your help

You can definitely get a Shiloh up here. I've got one on order now and it should be completed this month. I'm using Questar International for importing/exporting. Not cheap but they take care of all of the details. Another place to consider is C. Sharps, their shop is right across the street from Shiloh. I've got a couple of their rifles and I'm quite happy with them.

Be aware that Shiloh rifles usually take more than a year after you order them before they are completed. I was lucky and got into a "bull barrel" run earlier this year so mine is being completed far faster than usual, probably only 7 months or so. C. Sharps has less of a backlog, usually 60-90 days IIRC.

With respect to Pedersoli, they have the best reputation of the "Italian Sharps". I've owned one and had no complaints.

Chris.

I had a Pedersoli replica of a Remington Rollingblock, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. A shooting buddy has recently given me the loan, for an unlimited length of time, of a Pedersoli Sharps replica, and this I like:D. I'm hoping;) I can 'sweet talk' him into selling it to me.

If/when;) I 'get' it, the plan is to shoot cast bullets with smokeless powder. My 1st objective is to add some more appropiate open sights.

I'd give that McMillan one some thought...US made and all.

Shiloh and C. Sharps are heads above the rest, not sure about the "Mc Millan" but would want to know about service and parts(interchangeability), sometimes they have a rifle made up already. Get Clay at Profit river to import for you, he's a good guy.

I've always wanted a rifle like this. Maybe in my next life.
I told my betterhalf that I'd feel very comfortable selling all my other toys in order to own a sharps in 45-110 or a 50-90. It's my dream gun.

Shiloh or C sharps for my money. If you want a Shiloh done sooner give Bill Goodman a call. Just google his name and it will come up. For a 200 dollar premium he can "jump the line" for you so to speak. He constantly buys production slots and will get your gun on a roll within a month or 2. Spend the money on the options you really want and don't worry about the cost. You will thank me later. Have fun!

With respect to Shiloh wait times, I think they really aren't that bad right now. I just had a look at my invoice. I ordered my rifle in mid March of this year. It's already completed and should be in Canada by today.

Chris.

I have a C Sharps 1875. It is beautiful and so much fun to shot. You can't go wrong with either Sharps company. C Sharps is faster. Do spend the money on upgraded vernier sights.

Unless things have really changed you can get you own import certificate, off the web, and not have to pay someone else to import it. I got mine about two years ago.

I owned a Shiloh sharps Long range express in 50/140 cal for a number of years. Great gun and I had loads of fun with it even though you had to build your own ammo from scratch. One issue I had, was that Shiloh used original Sharps specs in building their guns. This meant it had a rather thick/large firing pin, and corresponding hole in the face of the breach block. When I used 'smokeless' loads (I know..Blasphemy' to many)
the primers quickly flowed back into the firing pin hole . This made opening the action difficult as it literally sheared off the primer cup.

I don't know if shiloh ever changed this spec, but it would be worth looking into.

I currently have a uberti sharps copy in 45/70...also a very nice gun and very accurate.

The big difference between C sharps & Shiloh, is that Shiloh is entirely hand built/made in USA. C Sharps farms out the building of the parts (ubert/pedersoli??) then fits finishes and assembles them into a finished product.

Finally..'Farshot' a CGN member has a 'Sharps rifle for sale (or had) when they were still one company in New York. Check the EE or post private message to him and see if it is still avail if you are interested in a 'real' sharps!

The Shiloh firing pins were reduced some time ago. I haven't heard of any complaints of that type for a long time. Certainly my LR express doesn't have a large diameter pin.

C. Sharps does assemble from parts, but they are all made in the U.S.A. The barrels are Badger and are as good as any made.

I've got some of each and am very happy with both. Beautiful rifles and a hoot to shoot.

Chris.
