Shilo's Battle of the Bulge

Here are a couple more. Some are of this years shoot, and some of years previous.

Here, team James takes (some level) of aim. Ed's team has always had great uniforms, but lousy aim.

IS THAT A STG44 I SEE IN THAT PICTURE?

And as always, the motto of this shoot is: Minor frostbite is not life threatening.

Its only life threatening if it affects your trigger finger, otherwise its all good! :D

Boy I wish I could come out for that one.

I can't wait!...hope the weather holds out though...
If you want to shoot in warm weather, move to Ontario. Here in Shilo we take what we get.

Were at 8 teams confirmed now, with a few individuals coming out. With the short days coming, we may have to finish the match by flares and spotlights.

Ever notice that it seems warmer once the snow is on the ground? Of course, the only reason for that is cause then you can wear your parka and mitts and not look like a woosy.

16 days to the battle, and counting.......

The photos are all Ed James work. He uses some kind of old cameras that need something called "film". Funny thing is all the photos only come out in Black and white. What a funny man Ed is.

Actually, Ed is a photo nut, and will not come over to the dark side of computers/digital cameras. He still writes letters instead of emails, and can always be counted on to phototgraphically document every Battle of the Bulge, along with just about every other match that occurs in Westman.

So nine, are you coming to the match?

I dunno. It will have to have to be "battle of the bulge 2: Future something!" Because I have no era firearms! :D

What is this "film" you speak of? Does sony make it?

:p

We allow the SKS in the match. Apparently they were in field trials (in fair numbers at that) during 44. Also, the rifles, while of a WW2 type, can be of post war manufacture, so something like a Enfield 50s made No4mk2 is OK as well.
And of course, the usual runs of Corcanos, Mausers, or Mosins all fit the bill as well. This is not a money match.....a guy with a $55 rifle is still in the running.

Heres an update on the match. Thanks to John Hipwell, of Wolverine arms, he gave our club a break on one of the AIA no4mk4 .308 rifles. We are going to give that away as one of the doorprizes (open to contestants only) to be awarded at the post match dinner. So for $25 bucks, you get to shoot, free buffet dinner afterwards, and a chance at a $800 rifle. If that won't get guys out of the house in December to go shooting, then I don't know what will.

I'll try and post a few more pictures from previous years shoots in the next day or two. But heres one for now:

This was Ed James a few years back when we used to hold the matches at range #1. At that location there are actually trees (compare with the bleak scenery of some of the other photos). The trees were, of course, planted, since nothing alive would want to be in Shilo by choice. That is, until you get to know the place.

If I come out to play, since its too far to tow my carrier can I bring my PIAT? Does it qualify in the match?...lol

Why dont you drive the Carrier to the range ?? :D I know if I had one I would! Far trip to Shilo though but one of these years I'm going to have to try and get out there.

Wonder what the cops would say if I got a carrier licensed to drive on the road with plates!

You can't register a tracked vehicle to drive on roads in Manitoba.

I actually dragged out a couple of live 2" mortar smoke rounds out one year...plan was to lay smoke against the other teams targets. But alas, the grass was too tall and I would surely have burned Shilo to the ground.

You can only shoot carbines at the targets below 105m . If you think your going to hit a 18" plate at 200, with a PIAT, I think you have some rethinking to do.

Hmm,

Driving the Carrier to Shilo from Nova Scotia isn't too good of an idea, I would have to drive through Que and that perhaps wouldn't sit too well with Sûreté du Québec. :)

Hmm, didn't relize the targets were that small. You may be right about the PIAT idea. What about my 3" Mortar with HE rounds? :dancingbanana:

Sitrep for Sunday:
Looks like we'll have record attendance, as long as the guys cars start in the morning. Low on Saturday night/sunday morning -30. Forecast high for Sunday is now -17. We'll see how those newfangled semi-autos work out.
Remember, be at range control for 9:00, hopefully we can get registration and range passes out of the way and be shooting by 10. After the match (approx 5pm) we'll head over to the Shilo inn for a buffet, bars open, and we'll draw for the doorprizes, including the AIA #4mk4 rifle.

I was out with the 4T today sighting it in. Remember, each shoot is only 10 minutes long, so it's really the wrong time to be sighting in your rifle. After we set up the targets tomorrow (Saturday) we'll take a few sighting in shots, so if anyone is in the area and is feeling a little too hot in the house, fire me a PM and you can join us.

I hope you guys in Ontario with your plus 7 degrees get sunstroke.

I hope to post more pictures by tuesday onto this thread. With any luck, it will be me holding up my new AIA rifle, and trophies for best dressed and 1st place.
But more likely it will be the Blood and guts award again.

I'll also post this here:

Here's my little photo-documentary of the shoot.

This is my attempt at a period looking photo...let me know how it looks.

The A-side semi-final...and the smokescreen that supposedly won Team Hipwell the match.

The AT section...two Boyes and one (correct me if I'm wrong) PTRD.

1st place.

To all you guys who aren't in the pics...sorry. I didn't take any action shots until the semi-finals, and only of the one team.

Thanks,
Matt

Have been watching the post's of this event for a couple of years and am going to try to put a team ONT. together (with our sunburns) for next year. Good event guys!

OOOoooooo.... I'm having flash backs looking at those range pics!!! I did my 03 Inf training in Shilo from Feb 74 to around Jul 74 (we had a "break" in our training, as the 2PPCLI was so low in man power back then that they took us off crse for 2 months to go to Wainwright with them), that's why our crse took so long....
