I have a Sendero in 300 WInMag with Burris Signature rings and offset inserts that needed a little more slope to get all the elevation I need. My thought was to temporarily shim and bed the rear base to 0.032", so I used some magnet wire for shims and acraglass to bed the base, once it has cured the wire will be removed and touch up the bedding. Any input ?

Should work. You couldn't get enough elevation with the inserts with the greatest offset?
At least with the inserts you won't tweak the scope by getting the rings out of line.

I just cut some shim stock, drill a hole and place under the base. I prefer one piece base so that you maintain alignment easier. Done the two base thing for years. Now older, wiser and lazier.

Looks good. Leave the steel/wire in there. Bedding will break down under vibration. Same reason you put rebar in concrete.

At present my 223 doesn't have any bedding compound and it is working just fine.

Consider getting some Burris rings w/ inserts. I see you are using solid rings. Not so good for your scope health unless your base alignment is bang on. Plus you can gain another 20mins of up by using the inserts - 30mm rings I presume.

I also see that the front has a huge gap and the rear looks flat. You want to cant the bases so that a straight across both bases leaves no gaps. Raising it alone will cause the scope rings to be way out of whack and bend the scope.

That's just a thought and may not be correct as the pic shows.

Jerry,

he stated, "I have a Sendero in 300 WInMag with Burris Signature rings and offset inserts"

The picture does not really show the inserts but I assumed he has them from his statement...

You are right on if they are solid rings... he would be stressing and marking the tube... a terrible mess...

Ha, just looked at the pic again. The top half of the rings are not on. The scope is just sitting in the bushings.

Another scope saved from bending.

Look forward to seeing that in a couple of weeks.

I am using Burris signature rings with 0.020" total offset inserts (-0.010 front and +0.010 rear). The gap you see at the front is the inserts, the top half isnt fully collapsed no big deal as the top half of the rings arent installed yet. I too have shim stock from 0.001 to 0.147" the reason I didnt use it is its stainless steel and anything over 0.005" thickness (per shim) wont contour to the receiver without over torquing the screws. When you use shim stock its advisable to use as few pieces as practical due to the "spring" effect usually 4 thicknesses or less and i would require 6x0.005" to attain 0.030". Brass shim stock would work, but i dont have any. If the bedding breaks down then I'll buy a one piece base (currently under spousal spending cap ) after the Summerland shoot. This setup should get me "Out there" 50 MOA.

I have a nice thick stack of 5 thou shims under my base and I have just tightened the stack down with no ill effects. YMMV

I don't bother making them wide so there is a visible gap around the base but it is holding just fine. Kind of like sitting on a washer.

50 mins of up should get you a ways out there. More would be better.

What is your zero going to be?

My 223 is at 1300yds :)
