Shipment of Ammo within Canada

I'm looking for information on this topic. I'm in a position to acquire free of charge as part of a gun trade, at least 4 boxes of ammo.

I have established that ammunition is a hazardous material/good and only certain carriers will handle it. In Canada, at least DHL, FEDEX, and UPS will handle it but when I called DHL, they informed me that they only ship from licensed dealers to individuals.

Canada Post will not handle it so I'm wondering if anyone here (non-dealer) has legally shipped within Canada ammo to an individual.

All comments and info welcome.

Thanks,

I've been having the same problem - I wanted to order about 15 pounds of powder from Higginsons. They tell me they use DHL; according to DHLs website/cost calculator, it would cost $62 to ship. I'd be better off buying locally. At that rate, I wonder how Higginsons can stay in business?

One of the Gunnutz needed some .358 Win ammo earlier this fall. When I tried to ship it to him, the freight would have been several times the value of the ammo. I'd like to know the last time any freight carrier even had rifle shells blow up on him. Dangerous goods, my ass. It goes in the same truck that hauls the damned marshmallows and lufa sponges.

Don't know what can happen to the ammo in winter in minus temps and wrapped up really good.DUke1 sent you a PM.

Doesn't Higginsons offer free shipping if you buy a certain amount of powder?

My main concern is can I do it legally? The value of that free-of-charge ammo could be as high as $125, so $60 + for shipment would still be a good deal.

And, as a footnote, the deal is not worth the risk if this is illegal. We have a couple of federal laws involved here including the hazardous material (Dangerous Goods in Canada) one not to mention the exchange/sale of ammo (I'm not completely familiar with the details).

Any more comments or advise??

Thanks for the input,

PS. More on selling and buying ammo:

Ammunition Businesses

As indicated earlier, the Firearms Act does not require your business or organization to be licensed to possess regular ammunition, but a licence is required to sell or manufacture ammunition. Further, ammunition may be transferred to a business or individual with a valid firearms licence, or to a public agency (for example, a police force or a government department) with a valid Public Agency Identification Number. There may also be licence and storage requirements under the Explosives Act, which is administered by Natural Resources Canada. Licence fees for those particular activities are waived under the Firearms Act if you have already paid to be licensed for those activities under the Explosives Act.

I ordered 1000 rounds of 5.56 from TSE... shipped for $35.00 via UPS. I realize you're asking about shipping individual to individual... but for comparison's sake...

And CanAm ships their ammo "free" for the purchase price, so it can't be costing them all that much...

FWTW.

Well, that's what I thought, but apparently that's changed. I thought it used to be 7 pounds of powder or more, and they paid the freight. I was looking for twice that amount.

Actually, I'm a bit puzzled by my exchange with them - I dealt with them in the past, and was quite impressed. This time, I sent them an e-mail (last Wednesday) asking about freight and a few misc. LEE parts, and they didn't respond. I described an intended order worth about $400 retail. I wrote again yesterday, and got a very terse response today saying, in one line, "We use DHL; they have a cost calculator on their website". It was almost a case of "Don't bother us, we're not interested in selling you anything".

They sure didn't sound like the customer-oriented outfit I used to deal with. Mind you, I haven't bought anything from them for almost two years; maybe they've even changed hands.

Oh, well. P&D charges more, but at least they don't snot you off when they take your money.

Nothing is free, its built into the price.

Makes people like you buy it from them for 500 flat rather than waiting to get a quote from TSE for shipping. Marketing201.
