Shipping an M92FS slide to the US for gunsmithing - looking for advice

For some time now I have been considering 'modernizing' my M92FS.

I like the platform, but to me the lack of tritium sights is a serious downside. Some folks here on CGN once pointed out that there are a couple of companies that can and will do this work.

This is the one most people seem to point out:

Has anyone here done this? Or something very similar? Not interested in conjecture. BTDT input only please.

Gunsmith input on this side of the border also most welcome.

Thanks.

Are you looking for advice on the actual work needed, or on the legal technicalities of sending gun parts to the US and back?

I'm just going to comment, not give advice. Since the slide is not a firearm I would suspect that you could mail it? it would be declared going in to the US as Cdn goods exported. Not sure if the addition of the new Trijicon sights would make a difference on the return? ITAR and such?
As for a gunsmith, try Casey at Tac Ord, he had done all of my Glocks. I'm guessing the Beretta requires the dovetail to be re cut for the new sights?

Why not just order the sights and have them installed in Canada - doesn't make sense to send the slide to the US for something as easy as installing night sights. EDIT: OK I SEE THE Beretta FS has no dovetail sights so the original must be drilled and the tritium vials inserted. Can no one in Canada install the tritium inserts?

Unless you are blind or are shooting in the dead of winter in the Arctic, what is the purpose of night sights in Canada? Just asking.

I had TruDot tritium sights installed on my M9. The rear sight is easy and the front sight slides over the factory one and is held on by 2 roll pins. I had a gunsmith do the drilling and pinning. Cost me $100 + the sights.

Tac Ord is - I believe licensed to replace Trijicon tubes - can't be too different from a new installation. As far as shipping a slide goes... it's shipping a major firearms component, therefore it's got ITAR all over it. The major components of a handgun, according to US law are; frame, barrel, and slide if applicable. This means you need an export permit (Can), import permit (US), import permit (Can) and export permit (US) - in that order. Additionally, the manufacturer of the sights must be a registered firearms parts exporting manufacturer and the installer must be a registered firearms parts retailing exporter (registered with USDOS).

Yeah, I'll give Casey a call and ask if he can do it.

While I'm sure its quite possible to do, I'd prefer to go to a guy that's done dozens. Failing that, Tac Ord's reputation is pretty solid.

Dead winter of artic.

Thanks for the witty input Fred.

No problem, but seriously what benefit are night sights? I could understand if CCW was an option in Canada. Cops maybe but other than that why shell out extra dough? Like i said just a question.

Yeah, the thing is I just don't care what your opinion is on what makes sense for Canadians. Take your debate to the politics section maybe.

Just did exactly this. I wanted a Harrison Retro sight on my Colt O1918 WWI repro. But Harrison's sights can't be shipped out of the US.

So I mailed my slide down to the Colt Custom Shop in Hartford Conn. No paperwork, just marked the Customs declaration as "Sporting Goods for warranty repair" on the outside of the box. Inside I had a letter to the Colt Shop detailing what I wanted done but the letter also made it clear that the slide was for repair and was not being sold or traded. I send it via CanPost insured. Got there in 6 days. Colt sent it back via FedEX at their expense and there were no problems at all. PM me for further details if you want.

Here's the end result.

None of my business maybe, but I didn't get the sense that the original question was malicious. Maybe I'm missing an inside joke between friends, I don't know. If you simply "want" these sights, why not just say so? Sounded to me like the guy was asking a legit question. Didn't get the vibe that it was an attempt at a debate. Just my opinion.

I dont know him from Adam. I figured this made it clear.

Appreciate your input on the sights Heddok. Cheers.

Thanks guys. That seems to be the consensus. I fired him off an email earlier this am.

Actually, just got messaged back that he cant do it currently as he has no more Tritium modules. Asked if he will still perform the install if I can source the parts.

I also contacted Dean Fraser at pistolsmith.ca (excellent service despite not doing any immediate business - thanks Dean). He suggested sending the slide to Trijicon directly for modification. Looking in to that as well.
