Shipping box clearly labeled as ammo - is this normal?

I live in a condo, and my packages get delivered to a front desk. The boxes tend to sit right on the desk in the lobby. With all the scarcity in sourcing ammo, I managed to find what I needed from Cabelas.ca. They shipped it to me in a box that had the contents clearly marked on the outside of the box.

At first, I didn't actually notice the label, but while I was signing the logbook (confirming that I've picked up my package), the guy behind me in line loudly asked in a horrified, disgusted tone, "Those aren't bullets, are they?? You can't have bullets in a condominium!" At the time, I didn't know how he would have known that, so I just laughed, shrugged and went on my way.

Right before opening the box, I noticed the label:

It's my first time getting ammo shipped, and I don't usually buy from Cabelas. Is this normal??? If it is, I'll shut up. I just thought it would be standard to have some kind of discretion, especially for folks like me who live in the GTA.

Next time I see that guy, I'm gonna give him some lengthy but polite education on Canadian firearms laws.

Ive had ammo delivered to my door, in the standard Military crate, with a nice big orange explosive label on it. So, Its pretty normal.

I believe its only firearms which require discreet packaging. I think ammo is treated like explosives in regards to transport, so their might be some regulations that state proper labellings must be on the container.

I would also double check your condo regs. Just to cover all your bases in case the guy decides to make it an issue with the condo board. Better safe then sorry.

Thanks, I thought it was just my package. It just seemed odd that firearms are discreetly packaged, but ammunition (which can be inferred to go hand in hand with firearms) have to be labeled. The transport regulation thing makes sense.

I started reviewing the condo regs as soon as I posted. Nothing pertaining to firearms, but apparently I'm not allowed have a BBQ on the balcony (which I've had for a year now). The things you learn. Laugh2

I know I have a fellow CGN neighbor, I usually see him in the morning on the weekends, leaving the elevator with a black guitar case and a CGN sticker on it... I'll ask him, too.

And at the next strata council meeting, Peahead took it upon himself to enlighten the council on the storage of explosives in the dwelling. This lead the council to immediately pass a new rule deeming it illegal to possess or store any explosive material in the building.

Rabbit Teeth do yourself a favour and I meen this Don't and I meen Don't try to Educate that Squid. you might open a hornets nest . most people - the public in general know nothing about firearms . I have had guys at work say to me gee I hear your into guns and unless I feel it's any of thier buisness I say I have no idea where you heard that because who ever told you that is mistaken . and I walk away.

it's not worth your time . and you might regret it after . but it's your choice . and if buddy say's something to you just say it was an old box they shipped some stuff to me in . and if he get's in your face then walk away . and I'd Ignore him from now on . maybe one day he will need a favour from you like his car won't start then he'll owe you otherwise someone who would make a comment like that is not who I would want to speak to . PERIOD. thier TROUBLE.

Oh, yay for stratas and nosy pinheads! So, I'll echo the appropriate response should have been that the box was just a recycle/reuse. So, the council has decided to disallow the storage of explosives. Great, that's fine and after all, cartridges are not considered an explosive, correct? And lastly, with this new rule change, you should be grandfathered from it.

I do believe that ammunition is considered "Dangerous Goods". The shipping of Dangerous Goods comes with a whole host of international regulations, rules, and procedures. Some of those rules and regulations pertain to the packaging and documentation for shipping. You will notice in the picture that the box has inked markings like "un 4GV..." That box itself is a Dangerous Goods certified container. They can't just use any plain ordinary box. There are rules for what sort of labels have to appear, and where, on the box. It's all a very complex and thought-out procedure.

That said, I am not so sure they need that big white sticker. I think they could have gotten by with a much less obvious marking, especially for ground-based shipping, which is much less formal than air-based shipping.

Thanks. I think I'll do just that. He didn't look like the kind of person who would like to hear what I have to say. Next time I'll do what you and others suggested - it's a recycled box.

My wife actually suggested that I'm a poor liar. I should have simply said that these were PRINTER parts... Cartridges and the actuator arms (small arms) for the printer itself. Yes, Cabelas sells printer components. :dancingbanana:

Agreed with Moose308 about the dangerous goods regulations.

As far as the nosy anti neighbor, go ahead and ban explosives. Gunpowder is a propellant, not an explosive.

You and I know this along with all the others in our community. However, those in the other realms hear a bang and instantly equate to explosive. I would not engage this individual again and try to explain it to him. The sooner he forgets the encounter, the better.

So I guess no aerosol cans then.
