I have shipped small quantities of ammunition (up to 3 boxes) via Purolator on a number of occasions without a problem. So yesterday I went to do it again and had a bit of a surprise. There are no more paper forms to fill out, it's all done on the computer. So I fill in the shipping information, go to page 2 where I enter "contents" = cartridges ( I never use the "A" word), tick off the dangerous goods box. The computer then offers me the various choices of classification and I tick off "limited quantity". So far so good. I click "next" and the computer then announces that dangerous goods are not allowed to be shipped.
So I call the clerk and politely enquire wtf is going on, the machine offered me choices on dangerous goods and then says no go. I also mention that it has never been a problem before. She calls head office and they, after establishing they will not be using Canada Post for the final delivery, say go ahead and process the shipment manually. Of course they no longer have the forms, because they are not supposed to do that.
So the clerk and I stick on a shipping label, write on it "dangerous goods, limited quantity" on both ends and send it on. About 45 minutes later the driver calls me to know the nature of the DG. After I tell him he says he does not know if he can take the package, after all it does not have the computerized documentation. What if it blows up and he would be responsible? Anyway he agrees to check with higher authority and call back if there is a problem. No problem, package is delivered.
I just don't know if I want to do that again.
