Shock and Awe

Damn there are some monster mulies coming out of Saskatchewan this year! I saw a monster archery buck taken near home this year. Grossed somewhere over 250" and buddy from the board whose GF just dumped a biggie as well! But this is a helluva mulie as well. Well done!

here is the quick story.

my dad and i went down south to hunt muledeer for 4 days. first day we looked around and walked and glassed alot and got a feel for the country. we saw a bunch of deer and saw a nice buck but he didnt offer my dad a shot going up the hill.

second day we did some more hiking and a lot more glassing and saw alot of deer. every were we went it deamed like they were other hunters walking ridges and not hunting very smart. it was discuraging but we stuck it out. the evening or the second night we went back in to the area we saw the nice buck from the morning before and sat down and started looking. 10 min later a nice 175-180 class buck steped out of the creek and my dad put him down with a single shot from 247yrds.

day three we didnt see to much of interest. lots of hunter walking ridge line and not hunting the area too well. just walking and hopeing to bump deer not using their bino's

forth day we check out some new country and then head back in to the same area we have been hunting. we start looking from a high ridge at 8:30ish and start seeing deer. i spot a 180 class deer thats a twin to the deer i took 3 years before and passed on him. as we were leaving a group of push hunter came in and sdaid they were going to push the hills to the east from there. we didnt say any thing about the deer we had seen. we left and they started walking.

we killed some hours in the middle of the day with highs around 20 made some lunch and went back to the ridge for 2. we looked around from our vantage point and had a nap. the deer started to move a bit at 3:30. at 4:30 i told my dad to get the packs a had a shoter spoted about 1500yrds below. got our gear motored down there and got with in 300yrds. 3 shots and 3 hit this monster was on the ground.

pics and butchering took untill well after legal shooting time and we made it back to the truck in a an hour and a half.

some things i learned on this hunt.

you need to hunt smart. i spent more time behind my binos and spotter than any one hunting the area. my dad and i watched a guys walk ridges sky lined for over and hour. he never stoped once to look with his binos or tied to sneak.

never give up and go home early. i wanted to trow in thw towel and go home with plans of coming back down solo next week for 2 days. the weather was hot there wasnt alot of mature bucks in the area and lots of hunters.

if you shoot the first 180 you see you can never tag a monster 200. i stuck to my guns and held out and took the deer i went down for in the last hour and a half.

i am honoured to see a deer like this let alone take a deer like this. i am truley gratefull for this deer and i will never forget a minute from that day.

Beauty of a deer. Nice job. But on a sidenote you are one brave man carrying out the rack on your back with the tines pointing upwards like that. My grandfather had a guy level a rifle on him one time carrying out a moose rack like that, he said never again, after that he carried them upside down!

i didnt leave the kill site untill after dark and it was way past legal shooting light. when was the last time any one saw a deer walking with a flash light, there was no chance of getting shot at.

the zone was north of montana and west of manitoba.

Congrats, thats a healthy looking animal. Sure makes the adrenaline pump, don't it. You'll have no worry about meat in the freezer this winter. Cheers.

got him scored today for the saskatchewan record.

he went 226 1/8 gross non typ and 218 1/8 net. his typical frame is huge. 205 gross and 197net frame. he is one awsome deer.
