Shoot 270 in a 280 rifle?

Has anyone ever shot a 270 cartridge in a 280 rifle?

Believe me, that is invigorating!

I was alternating between my 270 and 280 rifles at the range yesterday, shooting one while the other cooled a bit. I had a box of each calibre on the bench and and you can guess what happened.

Bonehead move.
 
Well, it won't hurt anything and I would be interested in knowing how much the .277 bullet expanded in the .284 barrel.
If you have access to a chronograph perhaps you could do it again and see what velocity you got with a 270 bullet in a 280 rifle.
 
Good way to get some of that 280 hard to find brass!
I found some fire formed 300wm that came from 7mm rm cases in the bin at our range a couple years ago, they had cracks and stuff in the shoulder and neck. Would have liked to see them going off.
Also heard of a guy using 300wm in his Wby as he said the Wby ammo was to expensive, lol.

Of course. Note in my original post I admitted it was a bonehead move.

Perhaps I can help someone else from making the same error. Otherwise I wouldn't be admitting such a foolish move in public.

Bad idea to have two calibres of ammo on the shooting bench.
 
It's an easy mistake to make and i have on occasion found a "stray" similar caliber cartridge in a box while at the range , the stray obviously a result of my error in packing up after a range session, for this reason I always look at the base of every cartridge I load to ensure the correct ones are being used. Happy hunting in 2015 MD.

I did something as bonehead as that at the range once.

I had a rifle with a skim of rust in the chamber and stuck an empty case that would not extract. I tapped out the case with a rod and got doing some other things including reloading the rifle. I snapped off the safety and settled in to shoot and looked over the scope only to see the rod still in the bore.

I never have more than one powder on the loading bench at a time.
 
An old trapper I knew found a casting on a gravel road once, it appeared to be a .308 casing that had been fired in a 30-06 rifle. The shoulder was blown far forward with almost no neck area remaining, the case was also split from the neck down about an inch.

Good thing you didn't try 280 in the 270!

I've shot 270 out of a 30-06. Very inaccurate but much lower noise level!

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it expanded enough to seal the pressure and make basically the same velocity as does the 280 bullet. In fact I would be surprised if it didn't!
I was once fire forming 30-06 ammo in a 06-8mm rifle, to get cases for the 06-8mm rifle. I was surprised at the recoil with the 30-06 ammunition in it. Plus, the primers were flattened to almost normal.
I didn't have a chronograph with me, but I found a piece of hard douglas fir timber a full 4 inches by 4 inches. I shot cross ways through it and the 30-06 bullet in the 8mm barrel blew a hole through the timber just the same as you would expect a 30--06 to do, when shot out of a 30-06 rifle!

It's all in fun until someone loses an eye lol. The problem here is for all you experimenters who claim this is a safe practice and have some "knowledge" of the benign outcomes of these experiments, there are many more who may try different combinations for sh_ts and giggles and have potentially tragic outcomes. Would you hand your teenage son or daughter various rifles and calibers of ammo and tell them to go have fun and see what fires in what ? A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
 
A buddy fired a 25-06 AI in a Rem 700 7mag and blew the extractor off the bolt,peppered his eye red with who knows what but ended up in one piece overall. My son fired a 6.5x55 in a .308 NM with no ill effects except for a sad pop instead of a bang.Had to remove some brass from the neck and chamber.

My sons and grandsons all had the knowledge of what was safe and what wasn't, when they were teen agers, regarding what cartridges shot in what calibres.
The teaching of that is covered under the column of common sense.
Besides that, you have gone away off on a tangent, as nothing whatsoever, was said about --"have fun and see what fires in what." Those are your words!
