Shootin deer in Saskatchewan with .223

caliber/cartridge length/or whaterver you like, restrictions for hunting are just a real blunt instrument to try and basically weed out idiotic cartridge choices, but they're definitely not idiot proof (nothing is) and they usually also end up inadvertantly making some legitimate cartridges illegal (i.e 44 magnum rifle illegal for deer someplaces due to cartridge length). Personally I think that you're better off having less hard regs (Like where the only restriction for big game is that you're using a centerfire), but also have good hunter education so that guys are chosing appropriate calibers/rifles for their game based on solid reasoning and not just a rule that makes sense in some situations and no sense in others.

hard and fast rules for certain situations are not the answer. Also, at least in years past, the hunters that used an inferior calibre were often great hunters, who seldom wounded an animal.
I have told on these threads before, how a homesteader I knew from depression days in Saskatchewan, used a 351 Self loader, known today as too weak to be suitable for deer. This fellow killed nine moose with one box of twenty cartridges for his 351!

Very true. Many oldsters used inferior weapons. A .223 is tad small in my opinion. As for those fools at WS and O in Stoon they dont know squat. They all told me that a .375 Ruger didnt exist and they had never heard of a Shiloh rifle. Guns are cheap in Saskatchewan as so many want to get rid of them. The deer population is exploding as very few hunt. Very few first nations people hunt anymore.

What does "truth", "oldsters", "tads", "fools", "Rugers", "cheap", "exploding" and "first nations" have to do with each other? :confused:
