Hey Gang,

I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy, and was wondering if I can shoot 44 mag out of it. I understand the ejector would likely not work as the belt is not as pronounced on the 44 mag. But, if I were to load them individually in the chamber, can I safely shoot them.

I know many of people have shot 410 shot shells out of 45/70, but I am curious to this.

Cheers

If you don't mind a bunch of smoke and fire leaking out of the gun and the bullet sliding down the barrel cockeyed, go ahead.

NO. f:P:

The 45-70 is usually about .458 bullet diameter. The 45 Colt is smaller at close to .452. Shoot the cartridge it was chambered for and avoid some headaches including gas leakage, barrel fouling and poor accuracy.

Of course. It was just curiosity, thats all. Thanks for the input guys

Using the wrong cal. ammo is very much a safety thing, isn't this covered at hunter safety courses, or pal courses/tests?? I don't want to flame anyone but these questions scare me!

It shouldn't scare you... I didn't do anything. I just heard a guest on Tom Gresham gun talk mentioning something about the two rounds a while back but didn't catch the whole discussion, so I was just curious if this is what he was reffering too.

Now if someone burnt there face up, I could see why you would be concerned. All I did was ask a question

If I recall correctly, what they teach you in the Firearms Safety Course, is to only fire the ammunition labeled on the gun. But if I did that, I would be a lot broker from only firing .357 out of my revolver instead of using .38 most of the time

Really? I never noticed a price difference. Especially handloading. Recoil, that is a different story.:)

Oh and to the OP just in case;

Cigarette smoke over time will cause some grime to build up on a gun, but it is easily cleaned.

The best gun for Bear Defence is a large bore rifle, or 12 gauge with slugs.

And I'm not gonna touch the "which bullets penetrate a cops vest" question.

Did I miss anything?
