My dad and I were talking about this question last night and since we both don't know much about buck habits I figured i'd bring it up here. If one of us shoots a buck what are the odds of there being another one within the immediate area? We have 100 acres to hunt in if that helps. Should we move to stands that are far away from the kill to increase our odds or will it even matter?

Just my opinion but odds are there will be another in the area. 100 acres is a fair bit of land for just one buck to inhabit.

Deer are creatures of habit and like to stick to trails. So if you're set up on a game trail that has a lot of activity. Just leave it. If one buck is gone that means some of the competition is gone and other bucks will try and take his does.

I would however, leave the immediate area for a day or so and hunt on foot on the far side of the property, then go back. All of the activity of getting the kill out will leave the others a bit skiddish for a little while.

Again, this is just me talking. I'm sure others have valid opinions on this as well.

I shot a nice 5x5 behind my pond last season and the other bucks and does that were on the alfalfa with him didn't even run off...
remember bucks travel in bachelor groups until they break up for the rut, meaning they have similar travel routes and will visit the same food sources etc when they travel alone.
if there are does in the area try a little rattlin to bring some horn back around ;)

Keep at it. There will be more bucks around and don't forget that bucks travel large distances during the rut so new bucks will be traveling to look for does. As long as the does are there the bucks will come.

Keep at it, we've shot bucks back to back in the same treestand. One in the morning then one that night or next morning.

Ditto to what's been said. I've shot a buck on a hillside in the morning and come back to check the gutpile for wolves in the late afternoon and had my buddy shoot a beauty of a 5x5 at the bottom of the same hill - and he was heading up it (towards the gutpile). Then again, the buck I took was surrounded by about 9 does so chances are the bigger buck was on his way to claim his harem, who knows.

If it's during the rut, 2 hours later another buck is liable to walk right by the gut-pile of your first dead deer.

And in 100 acres there are guaranteed to be other bucks, plus bucks from the other area that maybe don't know they are supposed to be on your 100 acres... ;)

There was a recent article in an outdoor magazine ( Ontario Outdoors ? ) not sure. Anyway it stated that if you gutted any deer and left the remains it would draw all deer in, even the big buck in the area. It stated that they would visit the site and you may have success by sitting on that site before the predators find it. Never heard this theory before ? If I find the article I give accurate location .
Where theres one, theres more !

What Gymbo said.
We got an LEH doe and when I drove by later that afternoon there was 2 bucks and 7 does checking out the gut pile.Unfortunatly my buddy is an idiot and had a small panic attack so he didn`t get one of the bucks.I`m taking the wife out this morning to have a look, hopefully she is more on the ball.

I have seen bucks killed at the same spot over multiple days right where the gut pile was left from the last one.

There will be more. Every time we check our game cameras we are surprised at just how many bucks are around. At one spot, we have seen 8 different bucks on the camera over the course of 2 days. All of the pictures were at night. They are around, there just more careful.

i had at least 4 different bucks (spike, 4, 6 and 8 points) where i hunt and its about 100 acres big...Well now theres 2 left since my sis shot the spike and i shot the 8points
