Shooting a doe with 50bmg

The 50 BMG bullet shockwave destructive force myth was busted a while back. The guy in the OP video is full of it.

A 243 is much more impressive on a milk jug than a .50 bmg
Regular 660gr ammo is only 2720 fps in a 29" barrel... Amax youre not likely to get any accuracy (or brass life) above 2600fps

The low speed, very streamlined shape, and tough construction make it pretty underwhelming on anything smaller than a full 5 gallon pail lengthwise

I would bet money that a 300 win mag would do more damage to a deer on anything less than a lengthwise shot

I am going to stand up for “the dude”......

It is clearly an ethical kill...... no doubt that the deer didn’t suffer......

I will also clearly state that I am a big fan of overkill vs underkill...... I just don’t want animals to suffer.....

If 50 bmg on a deer is really no big deal, then why so many mentions of it and why the “comment and subscribe” bs?......

Why the sensationalism around overgunning and the bs sucked
The eyes out stuff?

Sorry. Try this.

Hunting with a 50BMG is far from being ethical.

I think I would counter that hunting with a 50bmg in the dark is unethical. Or maybe we could just shorten that to hunting with any caliber in the dark is unethical.

As with ANY caliber, shot placement is key - and it gets a lot harder in low light. He should have waited for a broad side shot, but was no doubt in a hurry because of the light, and chose a bad angle for any gun, especially a 50bmg.

Noooo.... this guy was unethical.. raccoon hunting, which takes place at night is not unethical
How about blame the people involved, not the activity or gun.

I feel like maybe somewhere along the way, some folks have lost the meaning of these words...

unethical
[uhn-eth-i-kuh l]
adjective
lacking moral principles; unwilling to adhere to proper rules of conduct.
not in accord with the standards of a profession:
She treated patients outside the area of her training, and the appropriate medical organization punished her unethical behavior.

humane
[hyoo-meyn or, often, yoo-]
adjective
characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, especially for the suffering or distressed:
humane treatment of prisoners.
acting in a manner that causes the least harm to people or animals:
humane trapping of stray pets.

Is using a 50bmg humane? Is it capable of delivering a consistent, quick kill? Then yes. It’s humane.

Is using a 50bmg ethical? Well, one of the tenets of hunters is to waste as little meat as possible. As was discussed above several times, shot placement is the key to this - no matter what cartridge you’re using. So yes. It’s ethical.

Sorry Galt. I should have been clearer.

Taking a shot at a deer in light conditions that do not permit proper shot placement is unethical.

Raccoon hunting involves lights, and coons treed by dogs that can’t go anywhere, allowing the hunter the conditions necessary for an ethical kill. Such conditions didn’t exist in the video above.

You think blowing a deers head clean off is an ethical kill? Might as well used a 20mm on a moose in that case.

A quick, clean kill is unethical? I'd like to see the math on that one worked out.

Rick from ATRS hunted quite a bit with a 50. I saw the results on a mulie doe. But he didn't shoot it in the head (because headshots on game at 700+ yards are stupid) but he did drop it pretty reliably.

50bmg should not be used on an animal. Unless you hunting whales keep it on the battlefield. I'm done

Because it's something the military uses? By that logic we should also leave "on the battlefield" such favourites as the 223, 308, 7x57, 8x57, 30-40 Krag, 30-06, 303 British, 300 WM, 338 Lapua and the 45-70. Also interesting, the 300WM, 338 Lapua and 45-70 were commercially available to the civilian market before they were adopted by the military. Which poses a very interesting "chicken and the egg" conundrum.
